choosing my wedding over my job?? they scheduled me on my wedding day!!! (VENT RANT!!)

Mrs., on October 16, 2012 at 1:01 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 1 58

Who do these people think they are?!?!? are you kidding me?!!! So the story starts 6 months ago when i asked for a week off of work right when i started this job. after they hired me of course not in the interview because i really needed a job. so after a month i told them i was getting married and going on my honeymoon i told them i have been planing so long and i needed a week off. they said NO because they needed me so i went higher then my boss i got the approval today they sent out the schedule for the 1st week of november and ...im on it!!! i told them there must be a mistake i got my days approved they say NO doesnt matter because im "PART TIME" only full time employees get to have time off. i am "part time" BUT i have been working 65 hrs a week for the past 6 months!! with no insurance!! they keep me at that title "part time" so they dont have to give me insurance or approve days off. i told them i had it all approved i even have the email saying yes you can have the days off

I don't know what to say other than go ahead of them again. Call you bigger bosses. If you do get fired, you will have a hard time getting unemployment. They will fight you and keep it wound up so they don't have to pay you. This sounds like a huge mess.

Actually, she might have an easier time w/ unemployment than you might think. Or course it all depends on your state rules. But in cali, well if you quit then you pretty much wont get it. But if they fire you cuz you want your wedding day off? That's unjust cause. Worse case scenario you dont get unemployment, but serious that's F-ed up & I would fight it hard. If they suck so much they wont give you wedding day off, you shouldnt be working for them anyway.

Being that you are part time, I know here you won't qualify for unemployment. You have to be classified as full time too. Second being in their policy it states part time employees are not alloted approved days off, they can use that against you to determine the states decision to approve your unemployment. If its apart of their policy, they did nothing wrong and you were made aware of this policy. If you live in a right to work state, they can terminate you without giving you a reason. I agree with the above, if they are giving you this much hassle over a week for your wedding, I would try to find another job after your wedding. Good luck!

Check the laws where you live, but everywhere I've ever lived, if you are consistently working over 40 hours a week, they are required to classify you as full time. All my part-time jobs were very careful to make sure no part-time employees clocked more than 39 hours a week.

    I agree with Ryan S.

In my job if we work 35 hours for for like so many weeks straight, you automatically become classified as full time. They are super careful that they don't let part time people get that many hours or if they do, they make sure they don't do so consecutively.

If parttimers can get unemployment, I'd say go the unemployment route if that's your only choice. I got a feeling, if they need you, they will take you back with reprimand. Who does the scheduling? Does that person has a personal vendetta with you?

If I am reading this correctly, you basically lied in your interview to land the job. You did not fully disclose information that may affect your job duties/performance. I am not condeming you as I know how bad we all need jobs but this could be what bites you in the butt in the long run. However, you are working 65 hrs a week while classified as part time...hope they paid you over time for those hours and I would contact the Department of Labor in your state to get the definition of a part time employee. While I can see this from both sides (I owned a business and actually had similar scenerio...for wedding that was planned for over a year prior to interview) I must say that if you get this much grief over it then maybe you would be happier finding a company that would appreciate a part time employee willing to work 65 hrs a week. I hope all goes well for you and good luck, I would have given my left arm for empployees that actually wanted to work! =)

I have no sick or vacation days because im "part time" i can only be absent 3 days before they fire me. i was in a car accident a few weeks ago had to get my car fixed and all that i was late because of the accident someone hit me on the freeway and i brought them proof of everything all the insurance papers everything they said it didnt matter they still marked me. and the people who do the scheduling were so rude to me! i have proof of everything they have put me through i kepts all of it i actually have a friend in the unemployment office she said as long as i have copies if everything i would be completely fine to get the unemployment because they already approved it so they have to honor it as far as they titling me as part time and having me work 65 hrs a week im pretty sure thats somehow illigal yes they did pay me over time but i wanted a part time job because i was told i had to work all those hrs. in cali part time is 25 hours or less. they have done this to me so many times

With my shower my nephews graduation the car accident and now they wedding im not having that i have a life outside of work thats why i was hired as part time. and as far as lieing in the interview they didnt know when i got engaged im not going to have my wedding postponed because of work this is not my career and they will not treat me this way. i am an ultrasound tech that just finished school i havent even had time to find a real job because i have been stuck at this call center 65 hrs a week and i live over an hr away from work. so i need to move on to bigger and better things anyways they only reason i want unemployment is to make these people pay for making me go through this! i will do whatever i have to to get it! plus yes it will give alot more time to find a place in my career because with this job i cant go to any job interviews if i miss work more then 3x they fire me. all i can say is its on!

Unemployment goes by your pay/hours you work not a title. So being part time is irrelevant.

You really need to leave this job when you can financially..

The FH does this for a living (educating employers on what not to do) and you have a case to get this company in hot water.. What they are doing IS illegal.

Maybe it's just me, but I'm shocked that everyone just suggests "going on unemployment" like it's an easy way out of something. There are definitely better ways to go about this. There are plenty of people right now that would love to have a job.

He said call the Dept of Labor in your state and they'll take over.

To add: They also cannot fire you during an investigation just so you know. Its illegal, federal labor laws they just cant get around..

Im sure you are not the only employee going through this and your "with holding the wedding" is a moot point for their shady practice.

On one hand, you do have proof that the higher up bosses approved your time off in writing (I think you said you had the email)

But on the other hand, I agree with tidaknot. You knew and withheld that information. I had everything planned when I interviewed for my current job and I told my boss that I would need a week off for my wedding. She was appreciative of my honesty and I got the job...and trust me, I was not the only one interviewing.

Sounds like you need to contact the people that originally told you that you could have the week and go from there. I would also contact the Department of Labor either way. Working 65 hours is not part time and if they are doing it to deny benefits, that's a big violation. A few years back, the Walmart chain got in big trouble over that.

So a a few things here 1) you didnt lie to get the job; lets just get that out of the picture. If no one asked you and you didn't divulge the information that's just what it is. 2) This is a decision about what can you afford at this point. if you can afford to leave you may want to, if not don't do it. or figure out how.

Choose my job over my wedding? Never. I'd get married and take a job at McDonalds if that was the case. Screw them for trying to pull this crap on you!

Go have your wedding day and honeymoon. That's what you've worked hard for and that's what you deserve, not all this BS!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but they really don't have to give you the time off. Almost every state in the US is an at-will employer, meaning that unless you have a contract, they can hire, fire, and request that you work any and every day of the week, ***as long as they pay you in accordance with state laws***.

And also, you really are not endearing yourself to your immediate supervisor by going over his/her head when he/she told you "no".

What you should have done at the interview was disclose your upcoming wedding and need for time off.

Were you simply late when you had your accident, or did you miss work? If so, how many days?

1st of all... every single state in the U.S. has different laws.

With that being said. IN most cases, during an interview, you DON'T need to disclose your personal information. UNLESS they directly asked you if you were going to need time off and you failed to mention it to them. Then that would be in the wrong for your part. But if that question never came up then legally they can't be mad.

2nd. If you are working 65 hours a week and you are at part time status then you need to call your labor beau because that IS legally wrong. If you are putting in the same plus hours as a full time employee then you need to rake the same benefits as they do. You need to be able to get the same lunch hour, pay, and insurance as they do AND same sick/personal/vacation days.

I was a summer employee at a local factory while in college, and they had the three strikes and you are out rule also. I was consider full time but only for a couple of months. If I was more then hour late it was consider..
