I have been at several receptions with this photographer and she is the one of the nicest people I've ever worked with. She was very attentive with the bride & groom but not invasive of their good time. She made my job of DJing that much easier.

Additional Questions and Answers
 FAQ: Weddings
1. What is Wedding Photojournalism?
Photojournalism is candid/documentary photography of the real world. This is the type of photography you are used to seeing in newspapers, some magazines, and other forms of news media. Applied to weddings, the photojournalistic style of shooting is natural and un-posed. Wedding Photojournalists will not stage photographs, but instead document your day as it is unfolding in a non-intrusive, candid fashion. For more information about wedding photojournalism, visit the wedding photojournalists association’s website at www.wpja.com (Sarah Whitmeyer is an award-winning member of the wpja).
2. How did you get interested in wedding photography?
While studying photojournalism at UNC-Chapel Hill’s Journalism school, I had the opportunity to work with Raleigh-based photographer, Missy Mclamb. Missy specialized in candid wedding photography and fine art portraiture. After working with Missy, I began to photograph a few friend’s events and loved it!

3. What’s in your gear bag?
I currently shoot primarily with a Nikon D300, I also keep a D200 and N90 in my bag, a speedlight SB900 (Flash), along with a wide variety of Nikon Lenses. I have back-ups for my back ups and make sure that I take as much equipment to my weddings as possible! I also own some very cool vintage cameras that I will sometimes bring with me to your weddings. However, I’ve been shooting more digital and less film lately.
4. Do you offer photographs in color and black and white?
All of your digital images will be offered in BOTH color and black and white! Photographs on the collages.net websites can also be ordered in Sepia (antique) tone.
5. Do you shoot with film or digital or both?
I’m currently shooting most of my weddings digitally, but can offer packages that include some film coverage if you’re interested.

6. Do you work alone or with assistants/other photographers?
I’ve worked alone on many weddings and feel completely confident and comfortable being the only photographer at your wedding. For larger events in the Asheville area (200 or more guests), I may invite an assistant to come along with me to help me out on your day. These assistants DO have cameras and also take photographs at your event. Most of the time, my assistants are photography students that are interested in gaining some experience shooting weddings.
I also offer the option of booking a second shooting photographer for your wedding at the additional cost of $400 (which goes directly to the second photographers). These photographers have more experience than my assistants and generally have a degree in photography or work for local newspapers.

7. What’s the turn around time for getting my photos back?
It normally takes 1-2 months for you to receive your wedding photographs back to you. During peak wedding season, it’s closer to 2 months and during winter months, it’s closer to 1 month. I’m happy to send you a few selections immediately following the day for use with thank you cards, etc… Also, I’ll make a few of your photos available on my blog immediately following your wedding day. During the time in between your wedding and when you receive your images, I am going through each of your images and making adjustments to them as necessary. This ensures that you have the finest quality images when they get returned to you.

8. What’s on the Image CD? Can I make my own prints?
The image CD or DVD is a high resolution disc containing all of your wedding photographs. The images are NOT sized down and are in their highest resolution when given to you to ensure optimal printing. The image CD or DVD will feature both color and black and white versions of your photographs. You are more than welcome to make your own prints from your image CD. I suggest uploading to a digital printing service such as www.myphotopipe.com or www.shutterfly.com or making an alternate disc with just the photos that you’d like to be printed and take that to your local printer (Walgreens, ritz camera, etc..). This way, you won’t be at risk to loose your original disc.

9. Is having the Image CD the same thing as owning the copyrights to my wedding photos?
The Image CD or DVD gives you “reproductive rights” or the rights to print your own photos for private use only. Whitmeyer Photography still maintains the copyrights to all the images. What this means is that have the right to print your images as you wish for private use, but cannot publish your images or sell your images without my permission (just ask though, I grant this permission freely).

10. What are your print prices like?
I like to keep my print prices (and all prices) affordable and with the revolutions in digital technology, this is possible! My most common print prices are listed below. Other sizes/options are available.

11by14 – 16.00 each
8by10 – 8.00 each
5by7 – 3.00 each
4by6 – 1.50 each

11. Do you pose family portraits after the ceremony?
Yes! Even though my style is documentary/candid, we always put your family together for some group shots either before or after the ceremony!

12. Do you do any editing to the photos before I get them back?
Yes! I go through every image, getting rid of images that I don’t feel are up to par and making sure the remainder are optimal for printing. Some things that I often to do images are cropping, color-correcting, correcting exposure levels, and removal of distracting elements in a photograph (such as bright “exit” signs, etc…). I also go through the posed portraits and take out any images where someone is blinking or making a funny face!

13. Do you also do videography?
I do not currently offer any videography services, but would be happy to recommend a few local videographers that may suite your needs.

14. Who are your favorite photographers/Influences?
One of my favorite photographers is VA-based documentary/fine art photographer, Sally Mann. Her work is natural, yet striking! Very powerful! I also love the work of photojournalists Mary Ellen Mark and Susan Meiselas as well as the classic work of Henri Cartier-Bresson. I could go on… ☺

15. What’s an associate photographer? Can I trust them to photograph my wedding?
Both my current associate photographers hold degrees in photojournalism from UNC-Chapel Hill (same background as me) and have also worked with me on several weddings before reaching the “associate” status. These are highly trusted photographers and both are full time photographers during the week. I would only trust the best for your big day!

16. Do you also do Rehearsal Dinner/Rehearsal coverage?
Absolutely! And like all my services, this is a very affordable addition to your wedding photography package. Full Day coverage starts at just $400.00

17. What are your travel fees? Do I need to provide hotel accommodations for out of town weddings?
Travel for the Asheville area is free. All other fees are $.60/mile round trip. For more information on fees to your specific area, email me at sarah@whitmeyerphotography.com

Tips and Advice
Your photographs are one of the only things from your wedding that you'll still have 10 and 20 years down the road! Don't settle for photographers with minimal experience or photographers that don't specialize in photographing weddings!
