We Have heard fondant is thick and nasty.
Like any product there are the good quality and the bad. The key is in knowing how to work with it. The cake should have a full coating of buttercream before it is enrobed in the fondant. The fondant should be rolled out extremely thin, so you can see the table through it.
It will add a sweetness, but not a flavor (ours, anyway) because you should taste the buttercream....that's the best part!
