Tips and Advice

Helpful Tips for your Best man and anyone else speaking at your wedding.

 

Below are some basic microphone techniques and some other advice for giving a better toast or speech:

 

 

Microphones are designed to speak into from the top. For best results one should hold it about an inch to 3 inches away from their mouth. Do not hold it down by your navel or wave it around like a conductor's baton, we see this all to often it's distracting and takes away from the message.

 

 

The worst way to hold the microphone is to cup it. Cupping the microphone is when you wrap your hand around the head of the microphone and basically talk into your hand. This prohibits us from making adjustments to make your sound optimal. Talking across the top or into the side of the microphone takes away from the quality of your voice This, also forces us to turn the sensitivity up high which then causes feedback.

 

 

Please don't turn the microphone on and off. We will adjust the volume for you. Remember to keep focused on your speech when the time comes. Do not blow, shout or tap into the microphone to see if it's working. If you are unsure, ask the DJ. Do not point the microphone towards the speaker.  Do not STAND in front of a speakers-this can also cause feedback.  We usually stage the microphone close to the head table to allow for a picture opportunity of the three of you in the same frame.

  

A good toast shouldn't take more than a few minutes long.  If you are going to do a 20 minute standup routine, please let us know before the wedding day so that we can schedule it in, and so it doesn't cause a delay with the kitchen, 20 unexpected minutes can spoil food ready to be served.

 

 

 Remember to have glass of  champagne or drink with you before you begin your toast. Many times the speaker is nervous that they forget to  make a toast after saying what they had to say, or they can't find a glass to toast with. This is awkward and takes away from the experience.

 

 

 Recalling the good old days is a great Idea, but keep it clean and dignified for both the Bride and groom please don't embarrass them in front of their guests or use foul language or references. It may also be on video, and you don't want them to look back years later and hear something said in bad taste.

 

 

Finally, We suggest using the intimate setting of the rehearsal dinner as an opportunity for other friends and family to make other toast and speeches.

So it doesn't cut into your festivities on the wedding Day.
