religion"called the UDV (União do Vegetal, ) pretty much a rubber farmer (gabriel) found jesus and jesus told them to drink this tea so everyone can get high which will make them closer to god: they have dress code, males are leaders only, when you drink the psychedelic tea if you throw up its evil leaving the body (congrats!) ceremonies are at night. they hang pictures of "master Gabriel" everywhere from their living room to cars.

I do not like anything about the UDV, its very cult like to me, and I do not believe taking drugs will bring you closer to God, I dont like some mans pictures on the wall....

His cousin is getting married at the church in November, hes going to our wedding, but i really don't want to go. they are having religious based wedding then "ceremony" (tea drinking part) then reception after.

@nancy, from my understanding they put drugs in it. People will be throwing up and tripping for hours, according to OP. If you read her original post, it says something about psychedelic drugs.

@NancyD if by "caffeine" you mean "psychedelic drugs", then yes, that seems to be a big issue.

    The tea is likely ayahuasca.

I mean, don't drink the tea or anything, but I will say that I am very much an atheist, so a Christian wedding is against my "religion", and I still go to those to support the people I love. I keep my mouth shut, say congrats and enjoy the party.

OP given your responses on this thread I'm starting to think this may be about more than just attending this one wedding and you and your FH may need to have a deeper conversation about if this is something he's truly left or just lapsed from. Because it sounds like it's still important to him and his family . I mean I know folks who've skipped cousins weddings without any such concerns, but it sounds like it's important to him to go to the whole thing which to me suggest there are other concerns about shared values that may need to be discussed.

It's just his mom and those cousins who belong to this religion, his mom lives in Brazil and his cousins normally do it invite us. We go and see these family members, bday parties and such. You wouldn't know they belong to the religion with the exception of the mans face hung up on the walls. My FH and I have talked and I have explained to him that it's super uncomfortable. He knows it's stupid and won't drink the tea but they are his family

the rest of the people are married except this one.

If he "leaves" it's not going to stop the other members

You can decline the invitation. You are not obligated to attend something your are invited to, it's not a court ordered subpoena.

Every single wedding I have ever attended has been against my religious beliefs, but I go anyways to support the couple and their religion has no effect on me.

Yeah I know satanist are. They are Sarcastic and metaphorical and Mocking of religions.

I wouldn't like to have to go though a full religious ceremony of any kind to any wedding. I'm not getting married at a church and I wouldn't want to for that reason.

I'm a Catholic. I've attended Jewish weddings, Hindu weddings, Muslim weddings, completely non-religious weddings, outdoor weddings, courthouse weddings, destination weddings...

I'd have no problem attending any of those. It's actually very educational and informative for me to see how other religions/cultures/belief systems work and what their customs are, I find it enlightening. Ceremonies always make me cry.

I would absolutely NOT attend this event. The drugs alone are enough to make me decline; my career would not allow me to be around such blatant drug use. I would skip this whole mess, it would indeed make me uncomfortable. Sorry not sorry.

Send a nice gift and call it a day.

    I agree Vicki....

I am not catholic, I currently go to a very liberal baptist church ( I don't go often enough ) but I was raised Roman Catholic .

I have gone to many weddings with different region based but never as a ceremony of the religion. There were small prayers and traditions but not at the church, having a full ceremony... although that used to be how RC weddings were . some Indian weddings can be very long as well.

I enjoy studying religion, I've taken classes in university as electives. I looked a lot into UDV and it was interesting to learn however it is scary because they are asking me to step into the religion.

The UDV actually didn't practice in the US until they were cleared to drink due to religious beliefs ( I think it took 7 years? This religion was founded in 1962) .

Meaning this religion is based only for the tea and they will not and cannot participate in religion without it

I went to my sister's wedding. It was a two-hour Catholic ceremony, in Spanish. (I'm Jewish, and don't speak Spanish.) So yes, I'd go to an overly long religious wedding of a religion I don't agree with.

I would skip the tea, though. Just as I skipped communion at my sister's wedding.

IF YOU DONT WANT TO GO THEN DONT FUCKING GO.

I don't get why you're making this out to be some sort of existential crisis.

I'm just gonna come out and say it. I think you already know damn well that you won't go to the wedding and you're using this post as a way to judge their religious practices. No, drinking an emetic tea and sitting in a chair high as a kite for 4-5 hours isn't my cup of tea (no pun intended), but that's their choice.

For the record, I would probably go but leave when the tea drinking commences.

From what little I googled it looks they at least won a supreme court case to be allowed to use this tea. But in general it feels very off and cult like. I would pass on the whole thing.
