Would you get a replica ring for day to day wear?

Future KH, on September 10, 2010 at 9:47 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 29

My ring isn't huge, but it is very big and expensive in my opinion. Since I walk through "rough" parts of town daily, and am fairly active around the house (lots of cleaning, cooking) am considering getting a replica ring and only wearing the original when going out. I ran the idea past my FS and he doesn't mind.

My questions are:

1. Do you have a ring for this purpose?

2. Where did you get it?

3. Does it mostly match your original ring?

I used to work at Home Depot so I had a replica e-ring for when I worked there. I got it from Kohl's. It was cheap and looked NOTHING like my ring. You can get CZ ones for $100 if you really want one of those. Now, I wear my ring all the time. I have the insurance on it, so if something happens I just get a new one without paying a deductible. DS doesn't even care if I wear my ring or not.

Is your ring insured? I wouldn't get a replica just because the ring holds a special meaning.

The ring is insured, but it is also a 1.7 carat cartier ring. And I seriously walk past very rough areas in Chicago 2 times daily. (Chicago is a special place, where fancy houses are built across the streets from low income housing, and walking past there with people just "hanging out" on the street makes me nervous). I have been just taking the ring off when I walk, but if someone steals my purse, the ring would be in it. Personally, I would feel much safer with a replica ring and my original safely at home.

Jenn, Chicago is great in October (we are getting married in Oct '11). Let me know if you need any recommendations of what to do while here.

We have insurance on it so I personally wouldn't get a replica. But if want to then do it. I think it's a neat idea.

Karen, I know what your talking about. I think that putting the ring in your purse is worse. The odds have it that your purse will be stolen before they take your ring off you. I turn my ring so its in my hand so no one notices it. But, in your case you should get a fake how many times can you push the odds, since you walk every day.

Haha! My ring IS a replica. I picked a fake ring. We're not rich and even a tiny ring is out of our budget. It was $30 on eBay. Just search for CZ rings with sterling silver bands. You can get the bands with rhodium plating so they look like white gold and don't tarnish.

Jessica, that is very helpful! I was a little hesitant to get one on line, but not sure where to go. Jenn also suggested Kohl's, so I will be making a trip there soon.

    Thanks ladies!

I don't see anything wrong with getting a replica if that will make you feel more safe. But if they want the replica, chances are they will attack you to get it, so unless you get a smaller ring, you will still run that awful risk of something happening. But then it wouldn't be the real ring that is stolen.

Jass, I know your points, but if it were the original, I'm afraid I will fight back instead of just handing it over. Also, the diamond was always a little big for my taste, I was planning on downgrading it to a 1 carat for the replica. I'm happy you are posting these questions, it is helping me think it through.

It's really up to you. Since I'm a "clumsy" person, I usually only wear my wedding band without my engagement ring on a daily basis. This way, i have the option to go "dressed up" when I feel like wearing a little more sparkle on a date or on a special occasion...

I know a friend who has lost the diamond of her engagement ring (a prong broke). She was devastated and I can literally feel her pain as I was there when she realize that her diamond was no longer on her ring... The worst is when she told her husband about it, but luckily although her husband was shocked for the first 5 minutes, he took the news quite calmly. I guess it's a challenge that this couple went through...

Do want to can to minimize damage... Wear it only on on special occasions, insure it, or get a replica... As there's really no need to put yourself AND your husband through the heart ache.

Just my two cents. Smiley smile

Could you turn your ring around while out and about? That way it will just look like a plain band and won't attract attention, but you'll still get to wear your ring.

I don't see a problem with getting a replica ring, if that will make you feel better.

But I have to agree that putting your ring in your purse is the worst thing you could possibly do! If you're going to get mugged, they'll take your purse too. If you want to protect it, but it in your pocket or your bra.

I also have a Cartier and used to work in the projects of DC. I thought about getting a fake for the exact same reason, but just couldn't bring myself to do it. Instead, when walking outside, I'd just turn it around so people couldn't see the sparkle. From afar, no one knows the name or the value. I am, however, going to get a dummy ring for the Honeymoon.

@PP, though, who mentioned insurance, it's not only about losing the ring. If she's in bad areas, her concern may also be about her safety if someone tries to steal it from her.

@Karen- As much as it would suck to have to hand over the real ring, I would do it if it meant my life would be spared. Could you keep your hands in your pockets as you pass those areas? I would do that with both the real or replica ring just in case.

Thanks for all the advise! I've been turning the ring around while walking and intend to continue with the replica. I'm also pretty clumsy and being platinum, it is getting scratched up quickly. I will be getting it polished before the wedding and annually thereafter, but I want it to look nice for the special occasions (like Angee stated)

Any suggestions on where to get a decent replica?
