Why having a dry/self cater wedding because of money is bull

So I was talking to FMIL this morning. She was telling me that when she and FH's dad were getting married (they're divorced) she couldn't afford much. But she had a wedding "in her means". She got a $50 dress from Macy's. Got married in the park, paid for the marriage license, was married by a judge...

Macy's. Got married in the park, paid for the marriage license, was married by a judge and had CATERED food and LIQUOR in the pavilion at the park.

If she can do it, with two kids and pregnant with my FH, little to no money, you can do it too. WITHOUT self catering, having no liquor, or asking people to fund your wedding.

ETA: changed the title because religion is the only exception to dry wedding, or having your wedding before dinner time.

Mrs Sandell? I'm a chef. My husband was a chef. We hated catering our own wedding.

I got a call from a family who had three chefs in the family too; two were in restaurants and one was at a magazine. When we got to the house to do a walk through, two of them were drunk. And stayed that way for the whole weekend.

Chefs don't alway like to cook, nor should you make them.

I don't even have words for Danielle. Because there aren't any

Per etiquette, having a dry wedding is not improperly hosting your guests.

People who offer to help usually haven't really done that before on the scale of a wedding.

They usually don't know what to do next.

It's not pretty. I can tell you that much.

But Sass, we're petty because we want to host our guests properly. Pshaw, she'll be having none of that. We are all stuck up bitches who want to get our guests drunk and fat.

    @Alyssa - Bwhahahhahaha

I think Spazzy is spot on about providing just a few cases of beer and wine for those that drink. Surely you can afford that?

ETA: This fat girl would be so fucking pissed if all you made me eat was a salad! But great joke Allison Smiley smile

@MsDani313 I swear I'm not white knighting. I specifically stated I'm not choosing sides. And I did see name calling...selfish, cheap, stupid, petty, stuck up, etc. That's coming from both sides of the argument. It just makes me a little sad to see this kind of behavior over wedding etiquette. I don't see a lot of good etiquette in this thread and it surprises me.

Y'all have seriously made my last like, hour at work. Keep going, I have 12+ more hours to go!

My husband has been out of work for the past 3 years. And yet, we still managed to pay all of our bills, loans, etc. and completely pay for a fabulous wedding where we hosted 150+ people with a lot of food and an open bar. We paid for 90% of it ourselves (we did get some money from my parents and grandfather, which basically paid for my dress and our photographer) and we walked away without any debt for that one amazing day. We did this by prioritizing our finances, working extra hours at a second job (me), and making sure that we had enough time to save the money to throw a damn good party.

My friends and family for sure would not have traveled to another state, no matter how much they loved me or were happy for me, if I was going to offer them crockpot stew and lemonade. They would have been "celebrating from afar" and I would have gotten a nice card in the mail.
