Oh this is such a dang bone of contention for me. I wanted to walk down the aisle to Kanye West but Lord haf mercy was it an issue. My father asked if I could just do the bridal march....uhm HELL NO!!!! Everything else about this wedding is traditional but damn I can't have Kanye? so FH and I will walk out to it and I will walk into Ave Maria the Beyonce version. I know this wasn't intended for a vent but thanks anyway!

Umm I hate the wedding march so no. It's just so harsh, and I like a softer piano. So I will walk down to a love song and have it faded out.

Sass: A lot of the time, you just do a single verse or the chorus or something when you're using a popular song, because you're right, they're a lot longer than you need.

@Libragurl: Well, if you want more arguments to use with your father, check out the Wikipedia article on the Bridal March. The music comes from the opera "Lohengrin." Here is what Wikipedia says about it:

Its usual placement at the beginning of a wedding ceremony is not entirely in accordance with its placement in the opera. In the opera, the chorus is sung after the ceremony by the women of the wedding party, as they accompany the heroine Elsa to the bridal chamber. In addition, the marriage between Elsa and Lohengrin is an almost immediate failure.

The "Bridal Chorus" is seldom played at Jewish weddings. This is often because of cultural objections, due to Wagner's well-documented and public reputation as an anti-Semite. It is also opposed by many pastors of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod because of pre-First World War Lutheran opposition to the theater and to the pagan elements of Wagner's operas. The Roman Catholic Church generally does not use the Bridal Chorus; one diocese's guidelines regarding the piece states that the chorus is a secular piece of music, that it is not a processional to the altar in the opera, and especially that its frequent use in film and television associate it with sentimentality rather than worship.

I didnt walk to the bridal march either. I walked to the instrumental of Penelope's Song by David Arkenstone. I had the flower girl also walk to the same song so it out a little, then I just walked slowly. I think we only had 30 seconds of the song left after I got up there. Here is Lorena McKennitt doing the song, its so beautiful.

I almost did "Somewhere over the rainbow" by Israel Kamakawiwo Ole' because we really love that song, but I felt as though everyone around us was already doing that.

So I ended up walking down to "Pachelbel Canon" which is also very close to my heart!

Thanks for the explination Cabell. I have never been to a wedding where they play a non bridal march entrance song, well not that I pade attention to. The music wasn't important to me it was seeing the bride come down the aisle.

Danie: Nice! That's really nice for a processional. I like it a lot. I like McKennitt in general.

The processional for the WP in our ceremony was "Galadriel" by Annbjørg Lien, which is already an instrumental; I really liked the sound of it.

Our recessional had lyrics, but they're in Swedish so it was basically like an instrumental for everyone in attendance... Just as well, since in translation, they're basically about having sex outside in the sun. :p It's "Euchari" by Garmarna:
