Who got proposed to without a ring?

dks64, on June 12, 2010 at 10:47 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 34

I know it's traditional for the groom to propose with a ring, but I'm curious as to who didn't get one with the proposal. Whether it be for financial reasons, the guy/girl wanted their FS to pick it out, the couple wanted to pick it out together, or whatever reason. As the bride, did you tell your guy you wanted to pick it out yourself or pick it out in advance and send him the link?

My formal proposal was with a ring however I did know what it would look like as when he asked what type of engagement ring I liked square, round etc I explained that I am not a fan of engagement rings and rathered a really nice wedding band which I would be willing to wear as my engagement ring as well. He showed me the band he loved on the designer's website and I loved it too and that is what he got and proposed with.

I got engaged and married without a ring. I got my ring on our first anniversary. Hubby wanted it to be perfect and I wore a promise ring style that was just a cz until he could save the money for the one I have now.

I did. i had my man on his knee with no ring, just looked into my eyes and held my hand. I never imagined what it would be like, although i thought about it for ages. You dont need a ring, all you need are those eyes. It was perfect. after all that, he started fumbling for something that might have represented a ring and looked over to the kitchen table, i just laughed, like what is he going to try to make? a napkin and a spoon? lmao. he found something in his room that he said he bought, it was a small trinket ring but it didnt fit, pinched off my circulation. of course i was the happiest girl in the world. the next week we went to the gem stores and i picked something out. i waited another 2 weeks for it to get sized. you really dont need a ring at that moment, its the moment that counts. im not just saying that either.

He didnt really plan that far ahead, somewhat for financial reasons, but the moment came whether he was prepared or not. sometimes its a moment that you cant just make,it just happens

DS and I had discussed marriage and basically knew we were planning to get married; then one morning as he was putting on his boots (it was February), he just kind of turned to me and said, "So, do you want to get married before we graduate?" He had already been looking at rings, but he knew better than to buy one without getting my input. :p (Although actually he'd picked pretty much the perfect ring for me--my only change was to get it with the red sapphire (ruby) instead of the pink, because I knew the pink would be too light for my taste.)

I don't think a proposal over the phone is any less "real." A proposal is asking someone if they want to get married. The rest is just frills.

My hubby had told me that he was going to ask me but wouldn't say how or when. Feb 13, 2009 in my dorm room I asked him when he was gonna ask me. He said, "do you want me to?" I said, "Yupp." So he got on one knee as best as he could since my bed was lofted and asked me to marry him. He didn't have a real ring but he did have my favorite flavor ring pop. =) We went to pick out my ring a month later due to family and financial issues. Later he told me that he was going to go to Build A Bear and pick out a bear, put a tux on it and voice box in it asking me to marry him and then he'd be on one knee while it asked me. I told him that would have been a cute way to do it. But I like our way better. Not very many people can say they were proposed to in a dorm room bed. =)

Yep! Well, we had a ring.. he calls it the "starter kit". At that point we knew we were going to get married and I was just waiting for the proposal. We were on a cruise and he had plans to go looking at rings with his sister when we got back, but he discovered what great prices he could get in the caribbean on diamonds. So he bought be a beautiful tanzanite ring (the starter kit) one evening on the ship and used that one for the proposal the next night. He asked me out to the balcony, got on his knee and proposed. The next day we went into Grand Turk and picked out the ring together. I kept asking him to repeat what he said during the proposal for the rest of the trip so I would't forget I love my rings and the proposal! and my FH of course Smiley smile

I found the ring I wanted. I knew FH was saving for one, but I wanted to pick it out so I am so picky. But I was out wiht my mom at a flea market, not really looking at anything in particular. Well there was this antique dealer there, and I saw my ring throught the window and I KNEW it was MY RING!! I called FH and he went up there immediatley to get it for me. Then when we were ready to buy our bands we went back to the same antique dealer and bought our bands there too. I was so excited bc I really wanted an antique ring.

My FH and I were talking about getting married way back in the beginning of 2009. His first proposal was us just joking and laughing with each other while we were lying on the couch watching The Office. He looked at me, stop laughing, and said "Marry me." Of course, I said yes. We both wanted to pick my ring out (which took MONTHS - I'm picky) so on Christmas of 2009, when we still hadn't found THE ring, he proposed with a wedding planning book. My ring proposal came the day before Valentine's Day of this year.

Yep..2 times. the first guy who proposed(I didn't even know we were dating!!!) "forced" me to go to the jeweler the next day to pick out a diamond set...I don't even like diamonds, and didn't understand why I had to have a ring so soon (he had planned proposals for several of his friends, and those had all included rings, so I guess he felt he had to keep up with his buds). I broke off the engagment on the 3rd day.

My now husband of 30 years (yikes!) got on his knee, and took my hand in his and told me that some day he would ask me to marry him. tears of joy-- that was more meaningful than when he actually did ask! but...no engagement ring. Just selected matching wedding bands and had them engraved.

My fiance didn't have my ring with him when he proposed....we were in Vegas for a dental convention and he was too nervous that something would happen to it on the flight, even if he did have it with him as a carry on. Especially since we were 3000 miles away from home, he didn't want to take the chance of misplacing it. It was still a meaningful proposal to me without my ring present. I never wanted to go home from a "vacation" so quickly before!!! I couldn't wait to get home and put that ring on my finger Smiley winking

My FS didn't have a ring when he proposed. He honestly just rolled over and kissed me and said he was done waiting..he wanted to get married and it was a legit question haha (he jokingly asked before hand) and I had said yes. 5 days later we found out the reasons I was sick was cuz we were pregnant and 5 days after that we ordered my band (wedding band) we just got my cz ring (neither of us like diamonds) a few months back

My FH proposed to me with out having a ring as well. But he knew that my mother had my ring. But he didn't have the ring the day that he proposed. He asked my mom for it after he had already proposed. Then once it was fitted he got down on one knee and started to cry as he put it on my finger telling me he couldn't wait to spend the rest of our lives together. Smiley smile

I don't have a ring yet. We decided we are getting married for sure, but he doesn't have the money to get me the ring that he wants to right now.

My husband was in the middle of renovating our home, installing new copper plumbing -my husband popped the question with a piece of copper piping that he cut off the end, painted the inside with nail polish so my finger wouldn't go green and placed it in a film canister box instead of a ring box. We had matching rings made later on that were rose gold... so they remind me of the copper ring he first gave me. Smiley smile
