Where is the best place to register is you want return the gifts for cash?

paula, on April 3, 2010 at 10:36 PM Posted in Planning 0 36

Hi there, we fiance and I moved together not song ago and we have to give away a lot of stuff. We live in a small apartment with no storage. Most of my guest will give us money but some of them keep on asking about the stupid registry...?!

Do you know what is the best registry if you are planning to return your gifts to pay for the expensive wedding?

Umm... Walmart has a great return policy. I think target has a pretty good one too.

I don't believe that registry items can be returned for cash though... you can probably only get store credit.

@Nab I have never tried so you might be right. I would suggest registering where you shop most often then so you can use the credit easily.

I just checked target and it says you will get a gift card back with the item price... which I think is standard for most places. Sorry but I don't think you are going to get cash back-- I would put more effort into thinking of things you REALLY need/want instead

Just do a small registry for those who insist. you can always use some pots or something. use it as an opportunity to upgrade something you already have.

Sounds very tacky to me. Sorry, but true. As far as Walmart, I would never set foot in, nor spend a penny in one of their stores, so if a bride I knew registered there, well, I'd give a gift from another source.

"Bed bath and beyond Gifts returns: For gifts sent back to our returns processing center, we will issue a merchandise credit which can be used in any of our stores nationwide, or we can issue a check refund to the gift recipient..."

It seams that the give you cash back!!! It must be the crisis...:-)

Lemme tell you something about bed bath and beyond... theyre completely whipped! they will do whatever their customers want them to do! i used to work there, and i dont care what anyone says... the customer is NOT always right! lol. but if someone complained enough, or switched tags, they would always always get what they wanted. lol. so yeah bb&b would be a good choice!

I'll tell you the funniest story I've ever heard RE: "the customer is always right". When FH worked in corporate, he was a loan officer. A customer walked into their branch 10 minutes after close on a friday afternoon. The secretary had left for the day. FH and his manager just happened to be still there and hadn't locked the door. The lady comes in and wants to make a payment on her loan (which they took payments as a courtesy) but she was demanding that it be applied to her account that day but since the secretary was gone and technically it was past closing, they told her it would be applied the next business day. So she says "What ever happened to the customer is always right". And the BRANCH MANAGER looks her square in the face and said "You don't really believe that do you?" LOL!!!

    ROFL @ Ladyless

I want to meet this branch manager

A guy got fired the other week for being an a--hole to me... and I'm just a cashier. He worked for a govt agency and could lose his credentials too! People are so stupid

Just a warning about a number of places--returns can be difficult if you don't have a gift receipt or proof the item was purchased off the registry, so you might have a few gifts that are difficult to return. I wouldn't register for anything you would really WANT to return since its not always possible. We've registered for some unusual items since we need very little household stuff [digital camera, Wii video games, patio set, candles, fancy foods.] Doesn't have to be all standard stuff. A friend had items like garden soil and car floor mats on hers.

If you want cash, why don't you have your wedding party and family spread the word that you really don't need anything for your home and to instead give you giftcards/cash. I'm sorry, but I wouldn't want to deal with the hassle of returning items, let alone the attitude you're going to get from the store you are returning 25 items to. I work in retail and I can tell you that they will be absolute b^tches to you if you bring back more than a few things at a time. You're taking advantage of their time (stocking, checking out, returning, and restocking) and if everyone did that it would eventually drive up costs to an unreasonable level just because someone was too scared to be honest.

Sorry that was a little bit of a rant, its just that after working a crappy retail job and seeing how some people have no clue and take advantage of return policies and other store policies it just gets me on edge!

Anyways, good luck, I hope you get lots of cash! Smiley smile

As noted, there are ways to subtly spread the word that you don't want a lot of stuff, as well as honeymoon funds, etc. I think setting up a whole registry with the specific goal of returning everything is dishonest and rude.

I agree to spread the word through family, if I bought a gift and then asked how you liked it after the wedding, you'd have to lie. That part would bother me.

As a guest, I would be pissed if I found out that the gifts were returned for cash. Its one thing to return a gift because you received duplicates. Its another thing (and a rude one, at that) to make people believe you want a particular gift and then return it for cash.

    .

What will you write on your thank you notes? "Thanks for the espresso machine. I got a lot of cash for it."?!?

    .

Only make a registry if you actually want the things you are asking for. Anything else is dishonest, rude, and comes across as greedy. If you absolutely don't need any upgrades to what you already own, then the most tactful thing to do would be to register with some sort of honeyfund (I think you get cash from those.) or to discreetly have your family and close friends spread the word that cash would be the most useful.

I delayed posting because this doesn't sit well with me at all. Make a small registry of things you want to upgrade (everyone has things they would like to upgrade) and leave it at that. People want to buy you presents because they care for you, so let them.
