What to get someone who doesn't have a registry?

Jamie, on December 19, 2012 at 9:04 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 14

My cousin is getting married this weekend. They live in Toronto and we will not be able to attend. They haven't registered anywhere. They came to our wedding and gave us a $100 gift card. I would like to do something along the same lines, but have no idea what there is in Toronto. Any ideas??

Can you get them a Visa Gift card or some such? Or just give them $100? If they aren't registered anywhere, they are most likely just wanting cash gifts.

I was going to say Sears or the Bay there's huge stores of both. Visa gift cards are a rip off. Visa gift cards, for example, expire two years after being issued, in addition to charging a monthly administrative fee of $2.50 starting six months after the activation date. So a $50 gift card could be worth only $35 if it isn't used in a year.

Here's an article on gift cards.

Wow! Good to know. That's pretty ridiculous. I need to go spend ours!

Though I agree with the visa "rip off" idea, but for me, I would never keep any gift card that long anyways. So I always prefer Visa cards especially since I am in the US and H is in Toronto, so I can use the card in both places.

We already finished one Visa gift card we got (and it's been 11 days), halfway through an AmEx gift card, and just got another Visa GC in the mail two days ago that will likely be used pretty quickly.

Amazon gift cards are good, too.

Money is definitely the way to go. If not cash, then a check. I cannot get past the $4.95 or $6.95 to give money... I can't make myself by the money gift cards when I can make a free withdrawal or write a free check. IJS.

Cash or a cheque is best. We received a bunch of those Visa gift cards for our wedding and I dislike them a lot for the same reasons as was stated.

Amazon gift cards work, as do The Bay or Sears for in Canada.
