My wedding starts at 4PM. The ceremony will take less than half an hour. We are not doing a receiving line, so we will be doing a few pictures and then dancing and eating dinner, so we plan to cut the cake by 6 PM at latest.

We're cutting the cake about an hour and a half after dinner, which is also 45 minutes from the end of the reception.

No problem! We may do it a little later, but no later than 6:30 PM. I want people to be there for the cutting of the cake because it is going to be so delicious!! Smiley smile

We are actually considering cutting the cake before dinner. No one is going to leave before dinner, and those that dont want to party all night can leave whenever they want without missing the cake cutting. After we are announced we are going into our first dance and then cutting the cake.

We are cutting the cake before dinner and right after the DJ announces us. That way everyone (family members) that want to see it, will get to see it and we won't have to worry about it later.

Talk to your caterer about this. Often, the cake cutting is before dinner if your guests will be eating the cake. It gives the caterer time to cut the rest of the cake for dessert while your guests are eating dinner.

But if your guests will be eating sheet cake or cupcakes instead of wedding cake, cutting the cake after dinner may make more sense. That way, you'll cut the wedding cake at dessert time and your guests will get their dessert.

Another person to talk with about cake cutting is your photographer. Depending on your contract, you may need to cut the cake before dinner so you don't risk going over time.

    Hope this helps,

    Jon

From my mother's experience with wedding some people start to leave before you even get to the cake cutting. This has happened at the elegant, formal weddings to the very casual laid back weddings so we are cutting our cake right away so our reception will be "backwards" from a traditional wedding timeline that way everyone is there for the big and photo moments. The rest will be history. Smiley smile

We were thinking around 8pm. ceremony is at 6, we will be done by 6:40 ish (accounting for starting a few minutes late) dinner will start at 7. I wanted to have the desert be a bit of a pick me up for people.

    Here was our schedule:

8:00 PM Reception starts; food available

    8:30 PM Video of ceremony

    9:00 PM Music starts

9:45 PM Musician break; cake cutting

The reception went on until past midnight. However, we wanted to have the cake cutting relatively early, so that the staff would be able to cut and serve the cake and deliver it to people before it got really late.
