What things do you refuse to have at your wedding?

Hi everyone!

While wedding planning, I have noticed that if I try to focus on all of the things I would want in my dream wedding, I either get overwhelmed by the vision or sad to think that, no, I can't afford to rent the most beautiful china and glassware with matching sterling silver cutlery. What I find better is think of the things I refuse to have at my wedding! If I just make sure those things aren't a part of my day, I know I will have a great time.

What are some of the things you refuse to have at your wedding? For example, I HATE mashed potatoes and green beans (the texture just is so wrong to me), and my caterer will not be allowed to bring those within a 10-mile radius of my reception.

No seriousness. At the end of the day, we will be married and spending a weekend celebrating with our loved ones. So we aren’t putting too much pressure on things. Oh also no fondant.

I am really against phones at the ceremony. I’m going to have it announced to please put them on silent and keep them away during it but I know they’ll be those few who don’t listen 🤷🏼‍♀️🙄😤

I do feel bad we decided against the taco bar, but the logistics just got to be too much with the appetizers and hors d'oeuvres we already had planned. I'm not big on mason jars but country definitely isn't us. We're more older lady modern. lol

I'll have to work on my list of no's. But for everyone saying no traditional wedding music as they walk down the aisle, what are you playing? I have been thinking about this.

Definitely no smashing of the cake in the face. I never understood why… I’m paying someone to do my make up and make me beautiful why would I want to mess it up with cake and icing? I also will not be doing the bouquet and garter toss. I hated it when I was single and people forced me to go out on the dance floor to catch a bouquet. It made me feel small.

I refuse to have these things at my wedding:
    No first look
    No garter toss
    No cake smashing
    No money dance
    No hard alcohol
    No derogatory/cursing music

FH doesn’t want to do a garter toss because his family is too proper. His solution? Hide a can of beer up my dress and pull that out instead, then proceed to raise it in the air and shotgun it. WHAT?!

Ugh. My fiance and his Best Man are insisting on the "Stupid Shuffle" because they say it is so easy to do. I'd rather have the Macarena.

No cake smashing. No garter/bouquet toss (we're doing the anniversary dance instead). Maybe no parent dances (our parents are too old), and definitely not doing the "save the top of the cake" thing. (My best friend did that, and she said it was like eating cardboard.)

Lol We are having BBQ but were also having some other options as well. HOWEVER, I totally feel you on the pumpkins. I don't want one pumpkin at my wedding or reception.

I am loving this thread! Smiley xd So many different opinions. Here's my list so far.

    - Nothing rustic. I have more of a modern aesthetic so nothing that would go with a barn venue (no burlap, no lace ribbons, no hay, no mason jars, no raw wood)

    - No country music. See item 1.

    - No traditional music at the ceremony. I don't like how dated and impersonal the bridal processional is and the standard recessional is so over the top. I'll be walking down the aisle to an instrumental version of "Can't Help Falling in Love." I haven't decided on the rest of the music, but instrumental covers of popular music is the plan.

    - No unity ceremony (candle, sand, etc.)

    - No phones during the ceremony. I want an unplugged ceremony so the only camera out is the one I paid for. I get so sad seeing friends' photos with nothing but cell phones in the background

    - No garter toss of bouquet toss. I'm over 30 so I don't need to parade out my 2 single, female friends. And the garter, just grossssss

    - No asking "Who gives this woman away?" I'm not chattel.

    - Nothing that is expected just because it's tradition. I'm not anti-establishment but I want our wedding to be a reflection of us. I'm not going to use standard readings or music just because that's what's always been done.

Totally agree. We paid for my maid of honors' dress, best man suit (that's it for the bridal party) and we are paying for each of their hotel rooms at the venue. Open bar is the way to go for us as well! Everybody just have fun!!

Awww come on...gotta feel the pumpkin love😁 Our reception is Oct 26, but the color scheme is gold/rose gold/ cream/blush/grey. I got artificial pumpkins of all sizes that I will be spray painting rose gold. I was also leaning toward pine cones, but fh said "let's not over-do it". 😂

Too funny! My FH was like 'We dont really need decorations. Ill just get some pumpkins and hay bales we can throw around somewhere".... It was then I had to inform him I would take over the decorating, because this is our wedding and not a pumpkin patch with hay rides
