What is considered a traditional wedding color ?

Tiffany, on September 3, 2012 at 9:25 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 20

My FH just told me our current colors aren't traditional enough . I guess I missed that class in etiquette school. He says Black and White with one accent color is more formal and traditional. HUH So what are traditional wedding colors ?

??? There are no "traditional" colors, other than the bride wearing white or ivory. Other than that, colors tend to be trendy. What is hot today, it cold next year.

When I got married, pastels were in. I hate pastels, so I did burgundy and a muted (dusty rose) pink. When my daughter got married, bright, vibrant colors were in.

Accent colors change annually. Go with your heart and what you love.

    Our weddings are so close!

Well, there are 'traditional' colors for spring; pinks, oranges, yellows... But guess what: it doesn't matter! Your wedding is about your style, not some tradition! Like, we're doing royal blue and buttercup yellow with accents of red. Not technically spring or formal enough, but it's my wedding haha.

If you're doing something super formal, yes black/white/accent color is the norm. But it really is about what you two want. The real tradition is making a statement about your tastes Smiley smile

Well is the issue that he wants a more formal wedding? Because you could have colors other than black and white and still have a formal wedding.. I think having a darker color for the main wardrobes help keep the look more formal (such a black, navy, or brown).. but that's just me! Smiley smile

Oh I'd just roll my eyes at him...it's more formal, but there is no such thing as traditional. Traditions change.

Brides only started wearing white once Queen Victoria did in the late 1800's so that's really not much of a tradition if you consider only a few hundred years isn't that old of a tradition.

    Lol.

Why not do all three? Pink, Gray and Gold would look wonderful together!

No no no, light pink and gray would be SO pretty together. Krisalicious did a light grey and yellow wedding that was gorgeous!

I think Antique gold and pink are each too bold...or at least, how I'm picturing. Do you have inspiration pics?

I think it depends on the bride. My colors are Navy, Ivory/white w/touches of yellow. They are the standard colors/linens for the venue we are getting married at so.. those were the colors. I had one friend whose colors were red (apple), black and white (those are her favorite colors). I went and visited the venue I'm getting married a couple of weekends ago and their colors were black w/pink accents. I think the colors you chose will be beautiful.

Show him some Brides or The Knot magazines to let him see all the possible colors so he can see that all colors can be formal...it's more about the type of clothing than the color, really. Good luck!

The pink and gold is beautiful! It's nice that your FH is showing an interest in the wedding design. Is there a project you could have him work on. He might just be looking for some way to help.

I'm really starting to lean towards the pink and gold. I'm having such a hard time finding the right stuff with the previous colors. PLus our hotel ballroom is mostly gold and that would look horrible.

@ Shiny : I have given him task to do and he never finish or get tried and move on to something else. I told him to take care of Tux, Honeymoon,Band,DJ and Transportation. Most of those I had to take care of, he is a big procrastinator. Honestly I think he was working my nerves just because ! LOL Men are like kids

Do you already have your ceremony and reception space?

    Gold is a warm color.

Gray is usually a cool color - but there are warm grays.

Does one of them look better with the reception venue's decor?

    Both would be Beautiful!!!!

I'd love to see your venue and picture is with the colors you've listed! I also love gold and pink, if fiancé would let me have pink I would love that color scheme with mint thrown in

@Hayley: The ceremony will be at our family church and the reception is at a hotel ballroom. The gold would look a lot better than the grey. The ballroom has rich colors, reds, blues and gold.

That gold and pink looks absolutely gorgeous together and it's a color scheme that I haven't seen a 1000 times over! You should definitely run with that one if you love it!

OOh, I do kind of like the pink and gold.... I just couldn't picture it in a wedding. I have a fabulous pink and gold chunky necklace I wore in my engagement photos. Doesn't look as nice in the picture though...Smiley sad
