What do you call your grandmother

Jennifer, on April 4, 2011 at 10:09 PM Posted in Planning 0 54

Okay ladies DH and i are in a bit of a disagreement about this. He finds it inappropriate to call your grandmother anything else other than grandmother. I have tried to explain that what you call your grandmother is a very personal decision that normally the eldest grandparent decides so ladies what do you call your grandmother?

I call my grandmother "mamaw". FS calls his grandmother "nana". I've also begun calling his grandmother "nana". I actually could never call his grandmother anything else, since other names are too close to grandmother and I have only one. Nana is far enough away that I don't feel weird about it.

I have a Nano and a Grandma... my mom decided she didn't want to be either and went with being called Mim. I also had a Memere (pronounced Ma-Meh) my great grandmother.

I have a Nonnie and a Cricket.. yes Cricket. she wanted to be called Bambi (what she was called in high school) but the oldest cousin decided at 1 year old that cricket was better, and it stuck...

Both of my grandparents have always just been Grandma and Grandpa. FH's grandmother was Mema. We just went to her funeral today, which was sad. I only got to meet her once.

I'm pretty sure my mother will just be Grandma. I just can't imagine her being a Nana or Bubbe (which is Yiddish for grandma).

I just have my one Grandma living that I'm very close to..I just call her Grandma..sometimes being playful I call her Rosie, or Rosaline (her full name) when she jokes and calls me Abigail instead of Abby..For us it would be odd if I called her grandmother lol! I never met her husband who passed, but his brother lived with them and I would call him Papap.

Both of my maternal grandparents died before I was born. So, my dad's mom was grandma - she passed away four months ago on my birthday. My dad's father was grandpa. He passed away in 1996.

White Grandma and Black Grandma. I was born in the middle of the grandkids so I didn't get much room to be creative. All I know is I randomly started calling them White and Black when I was about 4 and the grandparents just took the names. No one knows why I started doing it. But they think it had to do with the color of their hair. I only have White Grandma still around and I still call her White Grandma!

My dad always made us call my grandparents "Grandma 'Last Name'" and "Grandpa 'Last Name'" for both sets of grandparents. He said it was out of respect.

But my nephew calls my mom "MaMaw Lisa" and my step dad "PaPaw Ray" These names will probably stick when we have kids as well.

My grandparents were known as Grandma (name) and Grandpa (name).

Personally, I HATE other names for Grandparents. My ex husbands parents wanted to be known by the Swedish names of Mor Mor and Mor Far. I refused to allow my daughter to do that.

Now, when I become a grandmother, please do not tell me, as I still see myself at 27. So there. :-P

My mom was 17 when she got pregnant so I was lucky to have most of my great grandparents as well as my grandparents around for a lot of my life. I have a Mema and Popa. 2 Memaw & Pepaw's. One Granny, one Great Gaworm [my cousin made that up] one Paypar, 2 grandpa's and 2 grandma's. My mom has insisted that she be called Nana by any of my children, so I tease her that she will be Granny. I hope my kids will call my dad papa but I will let them choose their own name for him.
