Wedding Reception Hors d'oeuvres ideas??

zayrie, on May 13, 2011 at 9:33 PM Posted in Planning 0 15

Hey ladies! I need your help once again!

Since we are catering our own wedding reception food, I need ideas on what kind of Hors d'oeuvres to serve during our cocktail hour that are not your typical ham and cheese platters and so on and that will not break the bank.

Any ideas??

We hired someone who bought a bunch of hors d'oeuvres from BJ's, including:

    • TGI Friday's Spinach and Artichoke Cheese Dip and tortilla chips

    • Pigs in blankets (beef franks)

    • Swedish meatballs

    • Italian meatballs

They have lots of other prepared hors d'oeuvres that taste good and will not break the bank.

Saw the coolest idea on a wedding show!! It was a macaroni and cheese bar, it had a ton of toppings like chives, bacon, different cheeses, ham and all kinds of other add ins. Since mac and cheese is just a side dish this might be a cute appetizer.

You could also have a full sandwich bar similar to subway but use slider buns instead of 6in loafs to keep it small.

How about mini quiches? I remember having some with spinach and cheese and they are easy to make.

Spinach and cheese spankopitas (or however you spell it)

    Chicken buffalo dip

Do you have Trader Joe's by you? They have a ton of frozen appetizers. It's probably too pricey to just buy and heat those, but it might be a good place to get ideas from.

The appetizer I'm the most excited for at my cocktail hour (and you better believe I'm getting some of these) is deep fried macaroni and cheese balls. Mac n' cheese is a big things for FH and I, so we wanted to include it.

Some other cute comfort food ideas that I've seen are tomato soup shooters and grilled cheese. Mini burgers. Mini pizza bites. They're yummy and nostalgic.

We're doing a pasta station and an ice cream sundae station, and for passed hors d'oeuvres- mini burgers, cornbread stuffed with chili, bruschetta, and crab cakes.

Since it will be immediately after the ceremony, you won't time to do any cooking- or your friends and family will be missing the ceremony.

As much as you may not like the idea of the fruit/veggies platters stuff- you need to focus on cold appetizers. Otherwise, you'll have cold appetizers that aren't intended to be. Either, overcooked and dried out for sitting for an hour or not yet warm.

I'd keep it simple if you insist on doing it yourself. Or cut down the guest list enough that you can hire someone.

And just make sure your venue will allow you to self cater. Because of the legalities and liability- most will not allow you to do so.

@ Meghan B. Our venue does allow for us to provide our own catering and we will have a staff to do food set up and warming so I do not need to worry about not having time or family missing anything. The idea of fruit/veggies is not something I will completely discard the idea of but it is not at the top of my list. Thanks for the advice!

@Shana R. I do have a Trader Joe's nearby and will def. be looking into that!

Ladies all of the ideas are so great! Now I have to narrow my selections down from all of these ideas! Thank You

My date is set for June 21st and we plan to do heavy appetizers instead of a dinner. Any ideas for the menu?
