Wedding at 6pm, is it in the afternoon or evening??

Tach, on April 11, 2012 at 9:44 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 12

I ordered a few invitations to make sure I liked them and when I showed them to my sister she pointed out that 6 should be in the evening and not in the afternoon. After doing a little research online there isn't a clear answer, what do you guys think?

And for those having a 6pm wedding, what does your invitation say?

Mine is at six and i said in the evening. I have no idea about technicalities- but anything after 4ish seems like it's evening and not afternoon. it's closer to sunset then it is to noon.

Our ceremony will be starting at 5:30pm, and we will be using evening. anything past 5, IMO, is evening. especially since the sun will be setting shortly after the ceremony, it just made sense to us. But since your wedding is in July, you could get away with either one; it will still be light out. I say, go with whatever you're more comfortable with Smiley smile

Mine is five and the few people that reviewed it pre-mailing had me change it from afternoon to evening. I'd say 6 is definetly evening.

In the evening... Make sure you get photos prior to the wedding so you're sure to have plenty of sunlight! Congratulations!

Thank you guys! I'm glad we caught this with the samples and not the full order Smiley smile

I'm not really concern about the sunlight because typically the sun sets really late during them summer here, usually around 8:30-9pm, sometimes even later Smiley smile

@Tach, my sun is setting really late as well, 8:06 according to the sunset chart. I won't even be bothering with candles at dinner as it seems silly to light candles during the daytime. But it does mean we will be graced by an AWESOME sunset during the dance portion of the evening. I'm hoping to catch some super romantic pics right at sunset before our photographer wraps up for the evening.

Humm, I didn't think about sunset pictures, maybe I'll talk to my photographer about that. According to the chart the sun is setting at 8:37 pm that day Smiley smile I'm just concerned we'll be too into the reception at that time and forget to go out and take some pics, lol

In the evening. If you are thinking of a sunset photo shoot keep in mind the side of the island you will be on.

I would say evening. Ours was at 5:45pm and they said "afternoon". I think you will be fine eiether way. You picked a good time for beautiful evening pictures with the perfect sunset glow. The hour before sunset is the best for photos!

Afternoon. Our wedding is at 5:30 and I had to call my grandmother to ask if that was considered the afternoon. 6pm and beyond is the evening.

Our ceremony is at 5:30 and I read that you don't need to specify "evening" or "afternoon" unless the wedding is held at 8, 9 or 10.

I found this article to be super helpful and used it as a guide: http://www.marthastewartweddings.com/228634/wedding-invitation-wording/@center/272440/wedding-etiquette-adviser
