*Update* To upgrade ring or not

Kali, on February 13, 2013 at 11:37 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 86

Hi,

I'm approaching my one year anniversary and my husband told me every year married I could get a .25 carat bigger diamond. The reasoning behind this is because we went with a IF clarity, D color, ideal cut, and GIA certified .33 carat for my engagement ring. We chose quality over size. He has given me the green light to shop for a bigger stone but I'm just wondering if upgrading every year is a bit spoiled? I mean my diamond is rare and beautiful. My only reason to upgrade is to pass it down to my daughter one day. Thoughts?

***Update***

So after careful thought I told my hubby I didn't want to upgrade this year. We celebrated our one year anniversary exchanging "paper" gifts. Last month my husband took me out for our normal Friday date night and surprised me with a beautiful 21 diamond curved anniversary band wrap!!!!! I was totally shocked because I didn't think one would fit my ring!!

I wouldn't want a new diamond every year. If you want to upgrade, just do it once. Get the size you want and keep that one.

I think it's spoiled and a stupid way to waste money. There's a movie you should check out. Blood Diamond.

I wouldn't, it sounds like a huge waste of money. If you like jewelry, get another piece.

@wasSoon2BMrsSmith We've seen it. We buy our diamonds wholesale to ensure they are conflict free. Thx.

What's wrong with passing on a ring that's a little smaller? The value is in the sentiment, not the $$$.

I agree, upgrading every year is a bit much, and yes, a bit spoiled. I would even wait longer than just one year to upgrade, too. And if your diamond is rare and beautiful, sounds like that would be better to pass on that just a larger diamond.

I would say not to upgrade it as I feel the ring that FH picked for me he put a lot of thought and effort into it when he bought it but "to each his own"

If you are just upgrading the stone, check out the value of the stone at today's cost first. Be sure you know your store's trade in policy first and foremost. As Amy stated sometimes you have to double the value, sometimes you don't. As with mine if I were to "trade up" I only have to to go $1 (yes one dollar) more for the stone trade up. But the setting is a totally different story. The setting I need to double the value, but that's because of the cost of gold, not because of the cost of the diamond. So if the cost of diamonds has gone down in a year, I would definitely go for the trade up, that would mean I could get a bigger and better diamond for the value. So be sure to check everything out before just "trading up" because it's your one anniversay.

Seems like a waste of money to me... why not 'collect' the 0.25 carats/year and just upgrade once - maybe for your 5 year anniversary.

Now, I'm not against diamonds - I have a diamond engagement ring and I love it (although I did tell FH that I was open to a non-diamond if that is what he choose - he ended up choosing a diamond in the end). However, you should take a look at this article... it is very interesting and a little disturbing how successful advertising has been in manipulating how we think of weddings/engagement/diamonds.

Thanks all for your comments. It's actually less expensive to upgrade every year rather than to just buy a 3 carat internally flawless diamond all at once. Thx.

@Just Reenski we would get the same quality just bigger carat.

@Moria yes, my husband can afford it and I thought it was quite thoughtful of him to offer such a generous gift every year.

So it sounds like you want to upgrade the ring every year -- if that's what you want, go for it.

Some of us think it's silly and spoiled to do it every year, so we won't do it, but it's not our ring, it's yours.

@Reenski I do and I don't. I admit my hubby does spoil me. However, I work pretty hard at home and in my community so I think I deserve it. : )

So what's the goal? How many carats would you like?

I still don't see the point of upgrading EVERY year. Like, when does it end? Are you going to end up with a 10 carat diamond??

So, if every 4 years is a carat after 20 years of marriage you'll be at a 5 carat diamond. If that's what's important to you, do it. Personally, I think the ring is sentimental and IF I ever "upgrade" it would be AFTER 20 years of marriage. I don't think you really get the use out of the ring if you only wear it a year. Buuuuut it does sound like you've made up your mind.

And just IMO no one "deserves" a big diamond ring. It's not a need.

    Lol @Desiree no I wouldn't get a 10 carat diamond.

@Mrs.S I would like to have a 2 carat internally flawless diamond to pass on to my daughter. The price for a 2 carat IF is a bit expensive so my logical husband came up with the .25 per year upgrade.

I absolutely would not. The ring itself (diamond etc) doesn't matter to me. What matters is that FH chose it, proposed with it, I love it. There's too much sentimental value. The diamonds themselves, eh, not a big deal to me at all.

    I guess I still don't get it.

Why not just save the money every year and then upgrade to the 2 carat? Do you really want a new ring every year?

So why not just wait 5 - 10 years, make sure you have the money to spend on the diamond then and buy it then? If you have the money to upgrade every year, I don't see why you wouldn't have money down the line to just upgrade outright. If your financial situation changes, it'll be money wasted on a ring -- that's just silly.

    But, whatever, your ring.
