Hi,

I'm approaching my one year anniversary and my husband told me every year married I could get a .25 carat bigger diamond. The reasoning behind this is because we went with a IF clarity, D color, ideal cut, and GIA certified .33 carat for my engagement ring. We chose quality over size. He has given me the green light to shop for a bigger stone but I'm just wondering if upgrading every year is a bit spoiled? I mean my diamond is rare and beautiful. My only reason to upgrade is to pass it down to my daughter one day. Thoughts?

***Update***

So after careful thought I told my hubby I didn't want to upgrade this year. We celebrated our one year anniversary exchanging "paper" gifts. Last month my husband took me out for our normal Friday date night and surprised me with a beautiful 21 diamond curved anniversary band wrap!!!!! I was totally shocked because I didn't think one would fit my ring!!

You're husband is a great man. What about getting a ring guard that compliments your ring? There are some truly beautiful ones that would add to your ring.

Vanessa, That is the only way to spoil me. Do something for me not give something to me. My husband cleaned my vehicle yesterday I was to thrilled! Then we went to a 4H benefit so I didn't have to cook either and came home with some stuff for our grandkids. Perfect day and night if you ask me. Today he went and fed the animals and started laundry before I got out of bed. Now that is being spoiled to the max! Those are the things our friends are jealous of. Not rings.

I'm not against upgrading and I don't think it's a matter of being spoiled as that is totally different for everyone depending on circumstances. I'm just a very sensical type person and I think upgrading every year for just .25 carat is such a small upgrade it doesn't make that much sense. The stone won't look very different year to year because it's such a small amount. But, year 1 to year 5 will be a large difference. If your ultimate goal is a 2 carat ring, why don't you save the money each year and on your 10 year anniversary go for the 2 carat? Or maybe do a 1 carat on your 5 year anniversary and the 2 carat on your 10 year anniversary. This also gives you an upgrade with a milestone so it will be special, rather than just a yearly upgrade which by the third, fourth, fifth time loses the sentimental value.

Also, I just wanted to say your ring is very beautiful and different. I know you want a larger stone to hand down to your daughter, but your ring is unique and would be a nice hand me down as well. Why not give that ring to your daughter plus all the money you would save? You never know, maybe your daughter's FH will have a diamond from his family he wants to use and they don't wind up using your diamond. I don't know. My feeling is to worry about your own sentiments right now and don't get a diamond for the purpose of handing it down because you never know what will happen. When the time comes I'm sure your daughter will be grateful for whatever size diamond you give her.

@Bride2Be thank you! I do agree that every year it wouldn't be as exciting and I stated some years we probably wouldn't upgrade. Thank you for the compliment. My ring is very unique and I do love it. After reading all the responses I am back on the fence about upgrading. I didn't say it because I thought it was implied but what I look forward to the most is spending another year with my hubby and that is what's most important.

@Angie we did think about a wrap but with the shape of my engagement ring we haven't found one to fit it but yes, a wrap was my initial thought. Thx.
