"Til *death* do us part"

coffeeandtea1, on January 13, 2012 at 5:49 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 10

How do you feel about the popular vow, "til death do us part"?

FH and I decided that we're not remarrying after death of the other. While that's not strictly true (we made our clauses), I still find "til death" rather grim.

What are some alternatives to "til death"? "For as long as we both shall live" seems finite.

PS. I found an interesting article on Fox News.

Here's a couple I found (it's just the last sentence)

I promise to cherish and respect you, to care and protect you, to comfort and encourage you, and stay with you, for all eternity.

I promise to love and cherish you through whatever life may bring us.

These things I give to you today, and all the days of our life.

I pledge to you all of these things from the bottom of my heart for the rest of our lives.

This will be a commitment made in love, kept in faith, and eternally made new.

Oh, Tach...I love the first one. I've thought a little about what vows we would choose. But hadn't decided yet. Thanks for sharing.

    **edit, cause auto correct sucks..lol

    Double sniff!

At our age, we firmly believe that our marriage doesn't end with our death.

Since I already said them, I will share my vows to DH. We did not include a finite.

"You are the man of my dreams, and the answer to my prayers. I knew you were out there somewhere. Nine years ago, we met by chance through your good humor. We haven’t stopped laughing since. Although it may sound cliché, you are my best friend, my soul mate and my lover. I promise to live each day to its fullest, to respect your opinion even when we disagree, to be your constant companion, and to love only you for eternity. Whatever comes our way, I promise to be by your side with open arms. I love all that you are, and just the way you are. I love you in spite of your flaws, but, I also love you because of those same flaws. You are my “Crusty Italian”, and I promise to forever butter your toast."

For the record, I mean "Crusty" because he is not Wonder Bread. : )

This is what FH and I are thinking of using Smiley smile

"______, you are my best friend and my one true love. When I´m with you, I feel I can be the person I want to be, and I cannot imagine my life without you. You make me smile, you stick up for me, you take care of me and you are always interested in what I have to say and do. Today, I want to make a promise to you and to myself, in front of our friends and family, to love and honour, protect and respect you for the rest of my life.

I vow to trust and value your opinions, and stand by your actions. I pledge to always treat you as my best friend, and equal. I will ask for help when I need it, and offer help when necessary. Let us be friends and lovers, and grow old together. And let us make all the years of our lives together be the best years of our lives. For now and forever. "

We were told that ours was not romantic, that it was morbid, but I disagree:

"May the Lord deal with me, be it ever so severely, if anything but death should separate you and me."

If you define romantic as that which displays love, I can think of little that does so more than a vow to stay committed to marriage under all circumstances.

We've decided to take a line from the Paegen vows my mom and step-dad used:

"I promise to love you every day in this world and the next."

My FH and I had quite the discussion about this and we decided that we would say something like from this day forward I promise to... instead of to death do us part. We consider ourselves soul-mates and cannot imagine being separated in spirit in this life or the next. (I also joke with him that death will not get him away from me that easily hahaha....as in the movie with eva longoria over her dead body lol...i didn't actually see the movie only trailers for the record.)
