Thank you notes- is this idea tacky?

Cheryl, on August 5, 2010 at 4:24 PM Posted in Planning 0 28

My fiance and I are tossing around the idea of sending postcards as thank you notes (handwritten messages on them, of course). However, not a postcard with a wedding photo that is today's trend..but actual postcards from our honeymoon in Hawaii. One side of me says stick with traditional, but the other is saying that people might appreciate something different. Our wedding is not Hawaiian-themed necessarily, but has lots of tropical touches- flowers, music, some food, etc, so we thought it could be fun & that people would get the symbolism. Any thoughts?

I love this idea. I think its very unique and would be so much more personal than just cookie cutter store bought thank you cards.

I think the idea is interesting, for sure. As far as being tacky- I think it could go either way depending on the postcard. But since most people forget the handwritten thank you notes- I'd say go for it!

Nice! You may want to use first class stamps on them instead, if you use 2nd class (typical postcard rate) it will take longer, which might be longer than you want people to wait! But that's a wonderful idea!

Can you get the postcards in a package or bundle? Usually postcards don't cost that much, but it might add up depending upon how many guests you have.

I think it is a unique idea though!! I usually just throw away the thank you after I read it, people might keep the postcards longer!

I love it! A Hawaiian theme does not sound formal, so I think the postcards would be fine.

I love this idea and I may steal it from you and send postcards from the Bahamas and write them out while I'm on the ship. Smiley smile

Sounds like a GREAT idea. Very unique, and I personally would be thrilled to get a postcard thank you note. It would never cross my mind as being "tacky" The thoughtful, handwritten note is the important part anyway.

I think what makes this a great idea is that you would get them where you went on your honeymoon. Especially if you pick one with great scenery, it could be really pretty.

Yes, less formal, but almost more personal in a way.

if you have some older and more traditional relatives, it might be nice to do the actual thank you card (or both...thank you card and then a postcard with a short *thinking of you* note)

Absolutely fantastic idea! No matter how 'formal', a personalized note from the heart with some thought and meaning is ALWAYS more appreciated!!

I don't know how many postcards you have to write, but don't forget to enjoy your honeymoon! I think this is a great idea, but I can totally see myself trying to get all the thank yous done and not relax at the honeymoon. heheh.

Thanks everyone for the great responses and ideas...I appreciate it! I think we are going to go for it. we are having a decent sized wedding, about 200 people- but this is so much more our personality than formal cards (I'm a graphic designer, so I think most of our friends and family are used to us doing things a little outside of the box). The plan is to pick up a few from each place we visit. Will let you know how it goes!
