Soda-pop at a wedding?

Boggsezbabe, on April 26, 2013 at 1:19 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 68

Soooo let me start out by saying that my parents are paying for most of the wedding/reception. Our reception is in the backyard of my parent’s house. We are going for more of a relaxed/fun BBQ feel. We are serving buffet style Polynesian food. I wanted to purchase drink holders (something like the picture below). Well last night my Dad tells me that he doesn’t want to spend 30.00 a piece for those (we would need to buy 4). SO he asked me if I would be fine if we just did cans of pop!? I straight up told him no way!!! (like a bridzilla). But I started thinking about it.. and I’m wondering if you ladies think that would be to ghetto? Be honest please…

Ghetto....I wouldn't do it. Maybe offer to split the price of the drink holders with him or something?

If its ghetto then my wedding will be ghetto. Im buying two boxes each of six varieties of soda and putting them into a huge cooler at the end of the buffet table. Easier than trying to make enough punch for over 100 people.

Thank you. That's what I thought, but my dad was making me feel like I was being ridiculous. Thanks ladies

The only thing that I can think of by using those containers is that if your wedding is outside and it's hot (assuming you put ice in like the picture) it will melt fast and water down the soda pretty quickly.

I actually think that the containers would be less expensive than the cans--maybe you could fiddle with the math and use this as an argument?

If you have to go with soda, maybe you could do bottles instead (like Stewart's or Jones')?

I think that cans would be fine!! You get get some neat looking tubs to fill with ice and pop (what we call it here in MN) and it would be perfect for BBQ setting. Besides with the drink holder, as cool as it is .. the pop would go flat??

@angel... That's the point my dad was was making. It would be so much easier/cheaper. I don't know what to do!

Have you seen those metal tubs? It might be cool to do the cans and use those (as apposed to plastic tubs). Not sure what your "theme" is?

At a backyard reception, I wouldn't care. One of my friends had her reception at a friend's farm and had soda cans... never really occured to me that it might be a "no-no." But I do think those drink containers are really cute.

My local TJ Maxx and Marshalls has had a lot of those types of drink holders lately, you might be able to pick some up there cheaper than you were thinking initially. See the cost of cans vs. making up some homemade sweet and unsweet tea and lemonade or something.

ETA: I wouldn't think twice about having cans at a BBQ reception but if you really want to do containers I bet lemonade and tea are cheaper than soda especially if you can get the containers cheeper. Try wedding re-sale sites too.

@jenn. I don't really think I have a theme. We are just having a relax BBQ feel.

Ummmmmm I'm doing a very southern themed wedding and we will have cans of soda (or glass bottles of soda depending on budget) on ice in an old claw tooth tub that is randomly in the garden - it's a clean tub don't worry

It's not really ghetto, it's just practical. You could always buy those drink coozies in wedding colors if you are really worried about it.

I really don't think cans are a horrible idea, but I think bottles would be more fun. I know you can still get the old-fashioned bottle at grocery stores in my area.

I don't see carbonation holding up well in those dispensers like you posted. I imagine those being used for iced tea, lemonade, etc, not pop.

I don't see anything "ghetto" about cans of soda...

They have those drink holders in your picture above Bed Bath and Beyond, and you if you use the 20% off coupon, they'd be a little cheaper. (Just an FYI)

If you put soda in those it may go flat? I think the cans are a little "cheap"

    Here are some options:

    1. Put them on your registry and hopefully you get them for your shower.

    2. Ask everyone you know if they have them and borrow. I know three of my friends got them for their wedding. (doesn't matter if they don't match).

    3. Keep shopping around you can find them a little cheaper.

I do like the idea trisha had of getting cool decorated tubs.

If you are doing soda I would not put it into containers. Once you open it, it will start to go flat. The sugary smell will attract bees and wasps, and if there is left overs you can't keep it.

I love those containers for tea, lemonade, water, etc etc but if you plan to serve soda I would go for cans.
