I went to a plus size shop about an hour from where I lived and I loved the experience. I did purchase a strapless bra and Spanx from Torrid (a high-waisted shorts style). I curled my hair (well, I am not good at using the curling iron but I tried) and also made sure to put on a little makeup and lipstick. I brought in ideas of what I wanted to try on which was super helpful. Don't worry about your "bridal size" as it will likely be several sizes larger than your street size. I was pretty locked into how I wanted to look, but I did try on some things that were probably a bit out there for me and it really just helped confirm my decision. Most of all just try to have fun and relax! Good luck!

Ok, I had the same fears going into my appointment. I'm larger in the chest area (though my waist is the smallest part of me) and carry my weight in my hips. I knew a-line or ball gown would work best for me. I did not wear a strapless bra because honestly, mine did not fit properly. I also didn't wear spanx. At the first store, the consultant just had me go in bra-less and it was fine! I am probably the odd one out here in that my jeans are a size 12, and I got into (and zipped) size 10 dresses and size 12 dresses fit me perfectly. I expected to be like a 16. David's provided a corset bra for the appointment. I will buy spanx and a good strapless bra for the wedding but going in natural was fine for the appointment.

Hey date twin! I'm gonna give you two dress shopping experiences I had.

My first appointment was at Davids Bridal and they do a silhouette style appointment where you try on a little bit of everything and then they start to narrow it down based on what you like. I was given a shaper with built in strapless bra to try on dresses. I appreciated being able to try on different dresses of all shapes, especially because I was originally leaning towards A line but ended up loving mermaids. But trying on so many dresses that I didn't like got very tiring. And I didn't fall in love with anything there.

Then I had an appointment at a small bridal shop and this experience was fantastic. I came in knowing the type of dresses I wanted to try and my consultant didn't have me wear anything under the dresses other than underwear. I was initially a little self conscious but the dresses were fitted enough that I didn't feel like I needed Spanx and felt much more comfortable without them.

Overall, my advice is try on what you want! You'll never know unless you try it on and you may be surprised by what you like!

And for reference, I'm right at the edge of plus size, here's my dress, its a size 14!

Thank you. We did order the veil as well. The veil was what did it for my mom so she insisted on getting that particular one. I liked it as well so I was fine for it.

If you think you’ll wear any kind of shape wear, you could make sure to wear it to try on dresses! That being said, I think shape wear is uncomfortable so first and foremost, make sure you’re happy and comfortable!

I am plus size as well, I booked my appointment with DB and specified I was plus. Wen I got there she already knew what she was to look for, although she started with every style I said I DIDNT want, and eventually fell for a dress that I just knew I would like before I got there she pulled dressed that were good got my figure! So I should say trust the process. Yes you are going to think you are too big (as I did) for certain things, if you put them on and don't like them you don't have to come out. But you can at least know that you tried it and didn't like it for reason and not thought.
