Sept 2020 Wedding in Europe..postpone or cancel?

Katie, on April 21, 2020 at 11:20 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 5
Any other brides planning to get married later this year in Europe, specifically Italy?! Are you postponing or cancelling?

We’re planned for 9/1 in Siena, Italy. Given that Italy might close its borders completely...we may be forced to postpone to not lose our deposits. However in a year are 100 people still going to want to travel to Italy?? So many unknowns right now I feel for all of you going through this too Smiley sad

I would postpone. Just talked to my friends in France this weekend (we were supposed to go in May) and they said France won’t allow tourists until end of Sept. I think even if ok, you may have a lot of guests decline.

From what I’ve been reading/seeing, any non-resident of Italy who travels into the country will be put under a mandatory 2 week quarantine and not allowed to use public transportation. They haven’t said how long this will last, but I imagine they will follow suit with other counties in Europe—I would say international travel for the rest of 2020 will be especially difficult. That’s just my opinion based off of my findings.

Not a wedding in Europe, but we were planning on honeymooning in Italy then ending in Munich for Oktoberfest. We don't have plans on going anymore and are trying to cancel with our travel agent bc there is no way we will be able to travel in September, and Oktoberfest was just cancelled. I would postpone or try to negotiate with venue on receiving a % back, if not all. If their borders are closed or there are travel restrictions, I don't see how they could keep your money.

    Hi Katie,

I'm so sorry that you're facing this decision to postpone or cancel your wedding. Unfortunately, it seems there's no way to know for certain when things will normalize (here or there) or what the "new normal" will be. Personally, in a year, I hope it will be possible to travel safely again...and I would LOVE to go to Italy. Smiley love

Do I understand correctly that you can postpone to next summer / September 2021 and your deposits will move without penalty? If so, that sounds like a great option. You'll be able to monitor the ongoing situation and reassess in 6 months, 9 months, etc.

WeddingWire has created some resources that may be helpful within our COVID-19 Wedding Support Central. Depending on what you decide, there are some tips here: What to Do If You Have to Cancel Your Destination Wedding.

And these community discussions might also help -

Destination Brides & Covid. What are you doing?

I'm wishing you the best! Smiley heart
