Our destination wedding was planned for November. We made the decision this week to postpone it until 2021. After assessing the current covid19 situation and the fact that we still have zero viable treatment options, and there is likely no vaccine for 12-18 months, we didn’t feel it would be safe for us or our guests to fly or spend time in a tourist destination where people from all over go. Plus, there is a good chance large gatherings will still be forbidden this Fall, which would have required us to make lots of changes to our guest list and wedding plans, which we don’t want to do. Tons of couples are postponing to next year, so we figured we had better be safe and secure a date we wanted now, before there were none left.

Thank you so much ! Sounds like I’ll be doing the same.

How did you handle guests who booked their flights and hotels already for your original date?

My wedding is 10/4/20 in Mexico. We’re holding off on postponing for now and waiting til July to make a decision. So far none of our guests have dropped out. They’re actually looking forward to it even more now if that’s possible because of this mess. Also, they’ve been taking advantage of booking their flights now too since they’re pretty cheap right now.

That’s so interesting ! We planned to hold off until May to make a decision; especially since Jamaica has suspended all commercial flights until further notice.

Have you talked with your travel agent? Mine suggests that I wait because if I chose to change the date right now I would incur penalty fees plus all guests that are booked without insurance would also incur any changes to room rates based on the new date. Waiting it out allows me to make changes 100% free as we get closer to the date if I needed to change due to Covid but since we're still 6 months away everything is proceeding as normal.

We had a few people book their hotel rooms already, and they were easily able to cancel them. Luckily no one had booked their flights yet though.

I'm getting married on 10.10.2020. My husband to be is Jamaican and we're vacationing in Jamaica as well!

I'm not making any adjustments because I believe things will pan out by October. I'm planning full steam ahead. My prayers and blessings to everyone.

As far as venue, I kinda got really lucky. My dad is the pastor of our church so we don't have to pay for that. We also have a reception hall where we've held many events and my uncle is the caterer who is also a professional chef. I truly have some control over costs so I'm not losing any money should I decide to postpone until next year; fingers crossed, I don't have to.

My travel agent advised that I do the same. I spoke to her a day after this post and she told me to hold on until July. I think my husband-to-be is nervous and wants to make decisions in June.

My husband to be isn't optimistic at all. He wants to call everything off and just get married at the justice of peace as soon as possible. I said "Not so fast"! I think he's over me stressing and talking about planning everyday.

Thanks, Phylicia! I thought mine was the only one too. I joined this site because after the initial proposal, everyone is OVER IT! And with everything going on, everyone has other things they want to worry about. My fiance would rather go to the courthouse than spend another day stressing about the unknown. I just bought my dress and I'm going to continue to stay excited about my wedding day.

I’m sure you feel so much better now! We made the decision a few days ago as well so we’re currently in the process of postponing to 4/4/20.
