rules for using a monogram / initial before wedding

We'llAlwaysHaveParis, on March 8, 2013 at 12:34 PM Posted in Planning 0 10

Can we use the initial of his last name on our wedding invitations?

(this goes back to my wax seal question).

I *think* etiquette technically says no. But this this one of those things where I'm like "Who actually CARES?!"

That being said, FH and I already have the same last initial, so I wonder what etiquette says about us, haha!

It is traditionally considered bad luck.

Also, seems a little strange to use it before the wedding...

but you know, it's up to you.

    Technically...

So before your wedding, as far as save the dates, invitations, or thank you notes for showers it's a no-no.

At the wedding: on the program, runner, napkins, floor decal, cake topper, etc... yes.

But again, I think if you want to do it, go for it.

No offense Stacy... but I really dislike when people pull the "bad luck" card.

If you believe in "Bad Luck" you need to believe in "Good Luck" too....

and it is Good LUCK to find a SPIDER in your wedding dress the day of your wedding.

~ good luck with that one ~

    ^^sick.

I think for a wax seal or something on the invitations, using your soon to be initial is fine.

We were going to add a tag tied to the twine around our invitations that had a "W" on it, but then the girl making my invitations never did it for me.

I wouldn't go around signing your new name, but I think for invitations it's fine.

We used the wax seal for our invitation envelopes with an "M". No one said anything, most people thought it was a nice touch.

See, I don't get this since there are soooo many invitations out there with monograms... If it's a faux pas, why are they so prevalent?!

I looked on the emily post website and it definitely says you shouldn't be using your FH's initial on your thank you cards for the shower, for example, but it didn't mention invitation-stuff specifically.

I personally have been avoiding anything with monograms (I'm not entirely sure if I'm switching my last name or not, so it's not just the annoying etiquette rules that have put me off them for the time being...)

I think a last name Initial is fine for an envelope seal. Go for it. Smiley smile

I think it is a full out Monogram with your initials and married last name that is what "etiquette" is talking about.

But again, I think a monogram on an invite is pretty, so I'm not one for etiquette on this subject.

Etiquette says no - unless you happen to already have that letter as your last name.

I didn't say what I believe, I just said that is what tradition says.
