Photographer Equipment Damage Liability

Gracefully, on November 30, 2016 at 12:28 AM Posted in Planning 0 25

I am considering a photographer for my wedding. In the contract it states that we would be responsible if their equipment is damaged by one on my guests. Is that standard?

    Yep!

That's why you get wedding insurance

Thanks! I've been engaged for one month and learning the ends and outs of wedding planning is like drinking from a fire hose. LOL

I can't remember if it's in my photographers contract, it's for sure in my DJs though. I think it's pretty standard

@ Laura: How in the world is that nuts? It isn't like the photographer says if they drop and break something she's responsible, they're saying that if her guests destroy something, she's liable, which really, she should be, as she's responsible for her guests as a host.

That's standard. Like MNA, you should be responsible for something like that anyway! Now it is just in writing.

It's understandable; I agree with how MNA explained it.

I have insurance for that. A guest has never damaged my gear, I personally wouldn't put that in my contract.

Thanks everyone for your feedback! I previously thought that vendors would have insurance to cover damage. This has been enlightening! ?? After reading your feedback I priced out insurance that includes cancellation, liability, and liquor liability; it priced out around $530 for $50K of cancellation plus all of the other coverage. Is that in the ballpark of what I should expect to pay for insurance?

I think it's pretty standard and yes, that sounds about right for insurance. I ALWAYS think it's a good idea.

It's not in my photographer's contract. That's odd. That is what business insurance is for.

That was not in my photographer's contract. Like Jay, mine had his own insurance in the event of equipment damage. Why would a photographer not have his own insurance?

If I was a photographer, I would never expect the bride and groom to be responsible for thousands of dollars worth of equipment if a guest accidentally bumped the camera or something. Accidents happen, especially with large groups of people.

That's ridiculous. I would be responsible for my own equipment and necessary insurance.

Me too, Jay. I don't have that specified in my contract, and I also have insurance for my equipment, but I can see why some people might want to include it.

I'm pretty sure our photographer has their own insurance for their equipment. I seem to remember that being on the long list of questions I brought to our first meeting. I thought it was standard for them to have their own, so this seems odd to me but maybe it depends on the photorapher.

My photographer did not have that in his contract. He had insurance for this.

    Neither did my DJ....

Several of you raise an interesting point....why don't more wedding photographers have liability and equipment insurance? Probably because venues don't bother asking for it when they should. That is why too many uncle bobs are slipping through the cracks when there should be credentials to work anywhere. Unfortunate. I'd not dream of going without it, it only costs me a bit over $500.00 a year. Well worth it.

Every venue I work in asks for insurance forms in order for vendors to work there. Except for the officiants.
