We’re very excited to announce that the Rockstar program is back! Rockstars are leaders of our Community who work hard to welcome new members, start interesting discussions, and answer member questions. They also have special powers to help them keep the Community organized, for example moving discussions to the correct group, quickly removing spam, and locking discussions if needed. Rest assured, Rockstars don’t have access to any member’s private information. Rockstars feature a blue and white star on their profile picture so you know who they are.

Of course, we have to thank everyone who took the time to complete our Rockstar survey in 2017 and gave us feedback to help shape the program today. We’re very excited to share this news with you and answer any questions.

    Could not agree more!

@Jo, when you say the mods will have oversight, does that mean a mod has to approve a thread being locked once a rockstar has tried to lock it? Or when they click lock, is it just instantly locked? I just don't see how this can be done without bias.

Spam, advertising, commercial content, or spiraling completely and absolutely out of control! Smiley tongue

All actions will be reviewed and approved by our moderating team, so we can and will reverse any actions if necessary.

Rockstars can not delete or remove anyone's comments or discussions, so that won't be an issue! They are not involved in sending warning emails or personally enforcing the Community Guidelines - that's what our moderators are for!

Rockstars can help people navigate the forums, welcome new users, and move discussions to right groups!

And yes, all discussions in the Rockstar group are also reviewed by our moderating team.

Agreed. I don't see how them having a private space to converse about other users under the guise of "their roles in the community" will be helpful, if anything it means they have a place to go to discuss threads and CREATE biases

ETA: Upon seeing Lynnie's comment - I understand you are saying that the discussion will be moderated and that they don't have any kind of specific power. I still don't agree that its right for them to have a entirely private space to discuss the forums and other users - given that these are active members of the community. I

I'm specifically asking about locking a thread. What's the process involved there? Does a mod have to approve the lock prior to it taking effect, or when they try to lock it, does it take effect immediately, to be reviewed after the fact?

We heard the feedback about the flaws in the old Rockstar program. Before our forum updates we had no way to give them extra abilities to help them in their roles, which is why we took a break after the last cohort ended their term. Now we’re starting things up again because Rockstars have some special abilities which will help them be an effective and positive force around the community, fight spam, help make the community more organized, support threads that aren't getting must attention etc..

I only recognize one rockstar. I don't think this program is needed at all. To welcome new members? New members don't really make intro posts any more, that I have seen.

What do you mean by "special abilities"?

Also does this mean that like the old rockstars -the new ones are not a permanent fixture but will rotate?

They can help us keep things organized by moving discussions to the correct group, closing discussions, fixing spelling typos in discussion titles, and their spam flags carry extra weight!

Correct - rockstars don't have to be rockstars for forever! We're going to keep things flexible but terms will be around 3 months long. And we'll be adding new Rockstars even more frequently than that!

This group isn't to talk about other users. It is to talk about their roles, get their assignments, come up with new ideas to generate excitement... And the Community Team will be in there moderating as usual so nothing out of line can take place - talking about community trends is ok, but talking about community members is not! Plus anyone who becomes a Rockstar in the future will be added to the group and will see the past history, so it isn't really private!

How will you ensure that the thread is indeed absolutely spiraling out of control?

Just this morning I noticed a thread was locked. Many of the comments were helpful and the only reason I could conclude that locked it was the exchange between two users, one of which was the OP who was being aggressive.

Are there guidelines to "absolutely spiraling out of control?" Is it the comment count? Two users going at it while the rest are offering constructive criticism? OP calling everybody rude because users provided honest feedback with their original plan they asked for advice/thoughts on?

    That can be subjective imho.

Oh ok, gotcha. Yes the thread would be locked right away. This is important if there is trolling or spamming taking place. But as soon as the Rockstar locks the thread it's immediately recorded for a Community Team member to review, and we can undo that action if it wasn't the right one to take

We talked a lot in the community about the program and sent out a survey which lead us to temporarily set aside the program. Now that they can do extra things in the community beyond what a typical user can do, we definitely see the value in bringing it back! Also in the past it was hard to get a group conversation and rockstar brainstorm going because it was all over personal email, now we have a dedicated group which will make things much easier!

I'm surprised that someone who had been on the forum less than two months was asked to participate.

If the Rockstars violate CGs or misuse their special abilities (not saying they will or have or are bad; this is all hypothetical) will they be given time outs and warnings like us "lower" users?

Just because that isn't what it's for doesn't mean that it wont happen. Other threads get off topic all the time and when regular users are constantly interacting its hard not to form biases or preferences.

Also - people aren't sticking around the forums as they use to. Many regulars have left or aren't active anymore - and there seem to be more one and done posts than anything. With so few regular members and adding 10-15 rockstars on a rotating basis it feels like they will overwhelm the community

Yes absolutely! They will lose their Rockstar status and be given the same warnings and treatment as everyone in the Community (or actually, a higher standard).
