Our venue price went up...after signing!

So I was pretty sure that AFTER we signed a contract with our vendor for our ceremony and reception, that they couldn't change the price on us, well evidently they think they can! I got an email a few weeks ago saying "We have made some changes to our contract. Your total balance, or cost has NOT changed. You will be receiving a new contract in the next few weeks." So I thought maybe just a few little things changed, no biggie. Then I get the new contract a few days ago and they upped our bill by about $80! I mean its not a huge deal, but how can they change this after we signed a contract?!? The way they did it was combine admin fee and gratuity, so now its all taxable by NYS. In response to us they said "unfortunetly we can not control NYS". We complained more and they said they can take $50 off our ceremony bill.

So should we complain more, or just let it go?

    Complain! Do you have the costs in your original contract? I would refuse to sign a new contract and demand that they keep your original, legally binding contract. They cannot FORCE you to sign a new one.

    You signed for a set amount--they are required to honor that.

    I would complain. If you have a signed contract with the price, they have to honor it. Plus you have, it appears, an email stating your price won't be affected. I'd fight it.

    Thanks ladies, I don't feel like a crazy person now lol. I have a feeling we are going to have to go in there in person and complain to get any results, not just email

    Thats absolute crap. It's their own fault to begin with. We had to start billing our clients NYS taxes, but we never BACK tracked and ADDED the charges to OLD bills. No, this is absolutely ridiculous. Yes, it's only $80, but it's the principle of the matter, and they handled it unprofessionally.

    Complain and DO NOT sign the new contract. Your old contract is the one you agreed on and that is binding.

    The only way I would change a contract is if the couple changed something major; the location, need for PA, adding to the ceremony, etc.

    Do not sign this.

    No way. I don't think they'd have the nerve to. I signed a contact with my DJ for the basic package. Within that contract, he even said if I want to add more to my package I would get the 2013 prices so if I add more in 2014, I would still get 2013 prices.

    ETA - put it this way. If they know they can get you for an extra $80 on the SECOND CONTRACT, who is to say they won't up you again for a THIRD CONTRACT?

    Tell them to take the $80 off something else...not $50, the difference isn't $50. They are responsible for the tax, if they hand out a contract where they lose some money, they need to still honor that. It was their fault, not yours.

    My venue increased their prices and now has a list of exclusive caterers and DJs - however, we do not have to pay more and can still have the caterer/DJ of our choice since we signed and paid the required deposit before they implemented the new contract.

    If there are new non-financial provisions in the contract that you wouldn't mind agreeing to you could state that you will sign an amendment outlining those changes, but I definitely wouldn't sign anything stating there are additional fees.

    Complain. Whatever costs were in effect on the date you signed the Contract are the costs the venue are obligated to honor. I'm big on letter writing and have had to do so in the past and I threaten to contact the attorney general, consumer affairs, whatever gets their attention. It's not the fact of how much, it's the nerve to try to get any extra $. Hmpf.

    It's a selling tax not a buying tax anyway. Realistically, we the consumer should never have to pay the sales tax.

    They legally can not do that. They then breach their own contract. The tax is their responsibility to pay for since it was formed after the contract. I would let them know that they legally can't do that. If they argue I would threaten civil action. I wouldn't actually take them to court, but threatening it might make them take a step back and think.

    Complain and don't sign the new contract. They are legally required to honor the original contract, just like you are.

    Quick update....I looked over our contact again and found a sentence about locking in the price. It said QUOTE "Pricing to be locked in 1 year prior to event". I now know this is bull and there is no way we are paying more than what we signed for!
