Need your honest opinion- Would you sit on a picnic blanket?

Private User, on April 6, 2015 at 11:37 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 53

We're thinking of having a picnic themed cocktail hour on the lawn facing our mansion. We will be having lawn games and the appetizer table will be set up with picnic baskets. I am thinking of having some picnic blankets on the grass, and maybe a few folding chairs. Given that our guests will be coming in semi-formal attire, do you think they would use them at all? It's either that or no seating outside.

No. You should rent some seating/tables if your venue doesn't have any. You could use checkered table clothes to keep the "picnic" theme.

What about elderly guests? pregnant guests? ill/disabled guests?

I personally would be fine (love sitting on the ground, kind of a hippie), but anyone who is older or finicky about their clothes will be forced to stand. Also if the ground is at all damp, that rules it out as well. My understanding is that you have to have some kind of seating to be hosting properly, but since it's just for the cocktail hour you may be ok... don't quote me on that though...

I wouldn't want to sit on the ground in semi-formal attire. Casual? Yes absolutely!

No, I cannot imagine anyone sitting on the ground in semi-formal attire. You need to have chairs available or move the cocktail hour inside.

I'm with Valarie. What about bales of hay? You could cover those with picnic blankets for seating.

    Me!!!!

I would definitely have a few folding chairs as well. I have older people coming that I just could not have standing for all of cocktail hour. I also don't think they could get up from a blanket if they ever got down.

Maybe set is up something like this with some chairs and some blankets. This is a ceremony, but it the best example I could find. I would do a few scatter sections of chairs with blankets in between.

No. I would look like a joke trying to get up without flashing my coochie to everyone.

My cocktail hour was actually the only one I've seen that even had seating available. Most cocktail hours I've seen have been standing cocktail hours (with maybe a couch or bench available outside in the lobby space of the venue). I wouldn't worry about it enough to put picnic blankets down

No, thank you. I would rather stand. Can you have cocktail tables outside?

I wouldn't want to sit on the ground wearing a dress. since you said its at a mansion I would think it is pretty fancy, And it is pretty hard to sit on a lawn with a dress. just my opinion though.

I would. I feel like you don't have to actually face the table. Woman could face out people who don't want to sit can stand around. If it goes with the theme I don't think it would be that bad. Who says you have to sit facing the table and do the awkward leg over the bar to get in and out.

Yeah, I definitely wouldn't sit down on the ground in semi-formal. We usually just stand and chat. I think as long as you have some seating for people that need it and tables to set your stuff on it. You'll be okay.

Oops you said blanket not picnic table. I take back my comment. HA! I don't think most females would be able to sit comfortably in a dress. or at least most dresses that I have been in

I personally would totally sit on the ground but like others have said I can see it being an issue for some guests.

@Allison that made me actually LOL

@Joyce no I would probably just stand. Sitting on the ground with a semi dress on and heels wouldn't be ok for me.
