We're thinking of having a picnic themed cocktail hour on the lawn facing our mansion. We will be having lawn games and the appetizer table will be set up with picnic baskets. I am thinking of having some picnic blankets on the grass, and maybe a few folding chairs. Given that our guests will be coming in semi-formal attire, do you think they would use them at all? It's either that or no seating outside.

Yeah I don't think I'd like the idea of sitting on the ground in semi-formal clothing.

I wouldn't want to sit on the ground in semi-formal attire. But if it's picnic blankets or no seating at all like you mentioned, then I would at least give them the option to sit on the picnic blankets. My feet would get so tired after standing for an hour and I would sit anywhere.

But as others suggest, is it possible to get some sort of chairs?

Would YOU want to sit on the (possibly damp) ground in a semi-formal dress and heels? I wouldn't. I would rather stand. If it's a 45-min cocktail hour after a seated ceremony, I wouldn't mind standing, but maybe you could rent some park benches for older guests?

Why not rent some cocktail/bar tables and put a checkered cloth on those. If you're wanting a picnic theme. I definitely would not try to sit on the ground in a dress.

I'd sit anywhere, really. But I don't think you need seating for cocktails hour.

ETA: Maybe a few little benches for the older folks?

I sit on the floor/ground all the time at home or at friend's houses, but I would never do so at an outdoor wedding cocktail hour. It is awkward to get down and up from the ground in heels, I'd risk getting my dress wet or dirty, and flashing the world. I'd rather stand.

I wouldn't want to do that in semi-formal attire, at all. Casual that's fine, but not for a semi formal event

I've sat on the ground in formal attire at several events - usually fundraisers with picnic themes. It was fine. I would do it in a heartbeat at a pretty wedding - but I am likely the minority.

NO, I would not sit on the ground. I would think it would be better to have bistro tables that people could stand at or better yet is the reception inside?? Why can't you just move the cocktail hour inside, if that's the case. Then people can sit if they want.

I would definitely not sit on the ground. I hate sitting on the ground even in casual clothes. You should look into some real seating options. I don't see how it's this or nothing.

No, I would just stay standing which would eventually make me tired and uncomfortable. If I'm dressed up I'm not gonna try to sit on the grass.

We do have seating inside, sorry i meant that it's either blankets/foldable chairs outside, or nothing. We aren't allowed to move the high tops outside. I'm ok with people going inside the mansion, just that I was hoping people could also enjoy the outdoors and play the lawn games we have prepared. I just thought if everyone goes inside no one would be inclined to stay outside to play?

Honestly, I probably wouldn't sit on it either. It's a nice ide to fit the theme, but i doubt people dressed up would feel comfortable

I would say no if you wedding is formal or even semi formal and the since the area you want people to sit at faces the mansion where I am assuming you will be having your reception I would say your wedding is probably not casual. That would be the only way I would feel comfortable sitting on a picnic blanket.

No. No ground, no bales of hay, no blankets, no beach chairs, no picnic baskets, no tool boxes. Especially not facing a mansion. This is definitely an idea that looks better on Pinterest than in real life. Kinda like most things on Pinterest do.

    100% with Allison.

You're having your wedding at a mansion, you really can't afford a few tables and chairs?
