My student wants to know...

loreen, on June 29, 2017 at 1:49 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 50

I am a high school English teacher. As an end of the year essay I directed my students to write about what could go wrong at my wedding....on this topic my students were not short on words or scenarios. I got one essay where a male student suggested that I hired an undercover alcoholic officiant- as soon as I get to the altar the officiant falls down in a drunken stupor to not be awakened AT ALL...it is quite evident that the officiant cannot perform the ceremony....my student ends the essay with "Ms. Mitchell what would you do?"......I'm so sure I wouldn't know what to do.....praying that my mommy would come to the rescue I guess lol......How about you- What would you do??????????

After crying a lot, I'd hope that a family member/guest was able to officiate last minute. Worse came to terrible, have the party and go to the justice of peace the next day? I don't even know. That sounds horrible.

This sounds like a hilarious topic. Love it!

I'd say screw it, go have my reception, and then make it official the following Monday.

Probably cry but then remember that an officiant is not required for our marriage to be legal in our state, so we would still be married.

I would probably cry but then brush it off and go have fun at the reception

I'd probably cry and go the reception eventually. But, when he did wake up I'll tell him thank you for the ceremony and get him to sign. lol

I would ask the guests if there is an officiant present (like they do on airplanes when a doctor is needed) lol!

Exactly @ Sara&L- every time someone even mentioned the word wedding I would start off with.."Let me tell you what happened to me....."

It's really not a huge deal. One time I went to a tiny, tiny wedding where a similar situation happened. The drunk officiant was reading the vow part and LITERALLY said "Do you, Ms. X take Mr. X"...

In case it wasn't clear, he said the letter X instead of subbing a name in.

We laughed and moved on and they were still married!

The worst that would happen is you wouldn't be officially married that day and you'd have to scoot over to the courthouse later

I would absolutely cry. After that, I would realize my FH's family is full of ministers so I'd snag someone else up there to marry us!!

@Sara&L SAME! My stepmom's mom is not my favorite person in the world, pretty much a narcissist to a tee. But... she is a notary, and actually offered to officiate. We politely declined.

We just found out an uncle of FH is legally an officiant so hopefully he would be present to finish the job.

    @catlady5x- their responses were hilarious!!!

here were some of my faves

1.an exgirlfriend or exboyfriend objects to the wedding

2.the caterer burns all the food

3.the caterer mistakenly uses salt instead of sugar in the tea or lemonade

4.the d.j. doesn't have wifi (i actually never thought about this one)

    5.inviting this class

6.I break a nail (my nails are my life and my students know this)

    7.the venue is closed

    * i have to say its like pulling teeth to get these students to write, needless to say they were more than willing to share their creativity when it had to do with my demise...I fell in love with them even more...... Smiley smile Smiley smile Smiley smile

I'm having a Catholic ceremony with two large traditionally Catholic families so I would have them all whip out their phones and call for a priest ASAP!

My parents would be legit pissed if my HS English teacher gave me an assignment like this. Way to further your students' education...

We have at least 2 other legal officiants on the guest list (one I didn't even know was until last week!), so we (unintentionally) have some backup. But if that failed, we would grab someone else to read through the script, then have a party, then go to the courthouse later.

@carrie it wasn't really an assignment- there was no grade for it- it was the last day of class and they were not going to be on their phones for that class period just because it was "the last day" as they so vehemently explained to me when I said I had a writing prompt they had to complete. But they were on board once they heard the topic. lol

I love this! I would certainly cry, maybe kick him while he was down.... jk - maybe. I would have the party and go to the JOP on that Monday lol

ETA: not sure why someone would be mad about this assignment. The year is about over and it's teaching them to write.... who cares?
