I am a high school English teacher. As an end of the year essay I directed my students to write about what could go wrong at my wedding....on this topic my students were not short on words or scenarios. I got one essay where a male student suggested that I hired an undercover alcoholic officiant- as soon as I get to the altar the officiant falls down in a drunken stupor to not be awakened AT ALL...it is quite evident that the officiant cannot perform the ceremony....my student ends the essay with "Ms. Mitchell what would you do?"......I'm so sure I wouldn't know what to do.....praying that my mommy would come to the rescue I guess lol......How about you- What would you do??????????

@Beut that's low but totally acceptable bc it's you. You can get away with murder in my book.

Well, unfortunately, most of my family is made up of alcoholics and a few who aren't alcoholics are MDs. My FMIL is a CRNP. Someone could get him up.

I'm a pastor and as such will have no less than 10 other pastors in attendance. One of them could step in and marry me with no problem. Two of my bridesmaids are pastors too.

@OG the only way Ohio is superior to PA is in the cheaper gas prices.

We had 3 guests who are officiants (with a lot of experience) so we would have been fine. Our officiant (also a friend) was pregnant at our wedding and a lot of the friends knew this so if she was passed out drunk, our marriage ceremony would have been the least of our issues. Fun topic for them to write about though!

I'd ask a good friend or family member that's good at public speaking, to say a few words, maybe check out the officiant's notes (if any) read our vows, and do a mock "I do, I do, you may los yada yada" then make it official the next day!

I think the worst thing that could happen is that the officiant wouldn’t show. At least if he were in a drunken stupor they could still manage to slur “I now pronounce you...” and sign the marriage certificate lol
