Multiple Photographers?

Kelseh, on April 5, 2012 at 8:22 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 7

We are asking that nobody bring their own cameras to our wedding. We plan to supply cameras at each table for our guests to use. I will also have a professional photographer, but I would like to have more than one. Has anybody had more than one professional photographer at their wedding? I wonder how the photographers themselves would feel about it.

It is common for photographers to have second shooters.... another person taking picture under their command that they arrange for. It is not common for people to hire 2 totally different photographers. Honestly, that just gets messy. They can get in each other's way. Many photographers even have special clauses in their contract stating that they should be the only professional photographer at the event (not including a second shooter that is hired through them)

We added a second shooter with our contract. The second shooter that our photographer hired for our wedding is another professional photographer who didn't have her own wedding to shoot for our date. Despite the fact that she is a professional photog herself, she will work under our photographer's direction that day. She will give all the photos she took to our photographer who will then package them with the ones that she took to give to us.

We are also having a second shooter, but this person works with our primary photographer and will be there mostly for formal pictures and the getting ready ones.

I think it is unrealistic and kinda rude to ask people not to bring cameras, especially in this day and age. What about people with smart phones that have built in cameras? Going to say no to cell phones?

Also, from what I have heard and seen providing disposable cameras for guests you will end up with maybe 10% good photos, the rest are crap. And also you have to pay to have it all developed.

Maybe set up a photo account on a website to have people upload their photos to after the wedding. Some of the brides on this site have done/are doing this. Ask them about it.

I would hire a team duo... 2 photographers who work together. Trust me! You don't want 2 photographers who have never shot together before. They will get in eachothers way and it will cause issues.

Are you keeping the photos that the guest take? Are you providing the guest wit photos of your wedding? They will most likely want their own photos.

We had 2 photographers (we had SO many pictures) but I wouldn't waste money on buying them for guests. You will end up spending more to develop them then what they are worth. Film is actually much more expensive now because so few people are still using it.

Our photog brings a second shooter. She also has a clause in her contract that she will be the only photographer for the day.

One of my friends had two photographers and a lot of her shots had the other photographer in the shot as they were both looking for the same good angles. They were kind of in each others' way.

If you hire someone with a second shooter, they work as a team and don't have that problem.

I thought about that too. I went to a wedding recently where we rarely got a view of the bride and groom because everyone was holding their cameras up. I thought that maybe we should encourage our guests to put down their cameras and enjoy the wedding, and promise that we would share our official photos with them later. But some people enjoy taking photos and I've also heard that some couples like getting amateur shots since the pro photos might take weeks to come back to you. Something to think about.

We are also booking a second shooter. Our pro photog is a friend of ours and we hoped this would help him have a little more time to enjoy our wedding as a guest. He said he likes having a 2nd shooter to make sure he captures every moment from 2 different angles.
