Moving in 5 mins away from inlaws?

Nervously shopping for a home, and the only one anyone seems to be content with is just a 5-8 minute *walk* from my in laws? Just a little bit nervous about being that close to family, when we're newly engaged and soon-to-be-Married.. Any thoughts or advice to ease a nervous brides concerns?

Hellllll noooo. We made that mistake. Fmil came over unannounced once and she never did again. We now live half an hour away. Not far enough.

I would never be able to live that close to my parents. Well, maybe my dad but definitely not my mom. However, I would happily live that close to FH's family. It just depends on your relationship with them. Make sure you set boundaries early on.

When you say "only one anyone seems to be content with" you mean you and your FH or you're also including your FILs? I personally think that unless someone else is helping you pay rent or mortgage their opinion on where you live isn't needed. I love my FILs but definitely feel that living that close to them can put a strain on the relationship we have.

We live about a 10 minute drive away from my parents, a 15 minute drive away from FILs, and 8 houses down from my aunt. We have no problems but we all get along very well. If that's something you're not comfortable with then you should keep looking. Buying a house is a long term commitment and your biggest investment.

@Melody beat me to the "Everybody Loves Raymond" reference.

This totally depends on your relationship with them as well as their behavior.

We live about a block or two from my in-laws and I love it. They recently moved from Chicago and we never saw them, so it's great having them close. We have zero issues with privacy, boundaries, etc. I'll echo the others - this is totally a dependent-on-your-relationship call.

I guess it depends on your relationship with them. We bought a house about a 10 minute drive away from FIL's, 3 minutes from younger FSIL and maybe 8 minutes from older FSIL. No one ever comes by unannounced, we always get together every weekend anyway for family dinner, and it is sooo nice to be able to babysit the nieces all the time Smiley smile I've been around his family a lot for the past 5 years so I love this, but if you're nervous or uncomfortable about it keep looking around! There's nothing wrong with that.

I agree that it depends on your relationship. We bought a house a mile away from my parents. The first year they were stopping by all the time (insert rolling eyes) but I think the novelty has worn off because they are a lot better now 2 years later. It has worked out for us because they help us out all the time and always come over to let our dog out while we are at work. So far so good for us!

Completely depends on your relationship. Do you and your FH live together now or will he be moving out of his parents? Also you say "anyone is content with" who else is involved in this decision besides you are FH?

Well that depends...are they the type to not understand boundaries? Then a hard no to living there. Are they the type to respect boundaries and privacy even living close together? Then sure

It's not like they're going to drop in on you or spy through the windows, or would they? No clear cut answer there.

We spend so much time with his parents, it would be great for us. I would hate, to hate, the idea of living that close.

I wouldn't worry about it unless they're the type to always be in your business wanting to know anything

Depends on the in laws. We live 3 miles from my FILs, we're in the country so they're basically our neighbors. We go over to their house quite often, and my FSIL comes to our house quite a bit but it isn't bad.

It depends on your relationship with them. We almost moved into the second house on DHs grandmothers land twice. The first time, I had some hesitations because we were dating at that time. The second time was a few months ago and I honestly was all for it. She's the type of person who wouldn't come over unannounced and would've been a great neighbor. The only reason we didn't move (either time) was due to damage in the house.

I think you and your FH need to sit down and make this decision together. Raise your concerns to him and reach a decision together. It you think it's going to be like everyone loves Raymond, then don't do it.

I think it just depends on your relationship with them like a lot of other people have been saying! I personally don't think I would want to live a couple doors down from mine either tho we have a good relationship. I'd be worried about her thinking she can always just barge in on us and there would be no boundaries.

My FH would love that. And I probably would too because she likes to cook lol
