Mermaid sexy vs traditional princess ball gown

Brittany , on January 15, 2010 at 1:32 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 28

When i first started looking for dresses I knew I wanted the huge ball gown cinderella type dress. But then I started looking at the mermaid sexy style and i am so in between. If i was a bride on platinum weddings i'd choose 2. Unfortunately im on a budget... HELP!

Is mermaid style the ones that are super tight around the waist-leg area and then flair out at the bottom? I always thought those ones look odd and they look to be really hard to walk/dance in.

I have not... I only tried on the ball gown one. I think i should go today to try the other style. For some odd reason there are very limited places in Houston to try on decent dresses.

Yes or there is another one that I dont know the name of but its tight all the way down to like your butt and then it flares.

As you are on a budget just remember to hire the photographer early.

I knew i wanted something sleeker since i'm so tiny (a ballgown would drown me!) so I went with a "trumpet" style. You might want to look at those because they are still tight through the waist and hips but doesn't hug so tight to the knees... it's a happy medium, you still get some fullness at the bottom but still have curves... i never thought i would go for a more mermaid shape until i started trying things on so just go somewhere and try on different styles even if you don't particularly like the dress.

Thanks october bride and Kelseyj. I am short and after like 10 ball gowns the dresses started swallowing me. But i'm nt tiny. I have lots of curves and junk in the trunk so i was a litle uneasy how i would look in the mermaid style.. I think ill just drop by today at davids bridal.

I think the ball gown is a little more figure flattering but it all depends on what feels "right" to you. Do consider dancing in the mermaid one and going pee in the ball gown both headaches that are often overlooked.

The trumpet style is very flattering and not constricting at all (since it's fitted to above the knee). Plus remember if you have curves and if the dress is made well, it will accentuate your shape and wedding dresses are structured to hold "things" in (unless you go with a very thin, silk or satin slip type dress)

I'm doing something like a combination of the two - the dress is tight through the waist and ALMOST at the hip/bottom, but from there it flares out to almost an A-Line dress (with lots of flounces & fabric). Its sexy without being too sexy. Wanna make sure the old ladies don't have a conniption.

I love my trumpet dress, i have no curves what so ever and it makes me look like i've got a very curvy silhouette. it's also got a corset in the back so I don't have to worry about "sucking in" all night haha!

here's a link to my dress...

You just won't know until you put them on. Before I tried any dresses on my DH said he loved the fitted styles. I did too but I thought with my curvier butt and hips that it would not be flattering me. I promised him I would TRY one on just for him anyway. As it turned out, the fitted styles really accentuated my curves in the BEST way and made me feel so beautiful! So that's what I ended up with. Just have an open ming and try on every style you can find, you never know what you'll love until you actually see yourself in it. You'll know the right dress when you find it, you will really feel like a bride in it and you won't want to take it off ever!

Thank you MrsJ - I'm one of those straight up and down girls, no waist and when I tried this on, I had an hourglass figure. Sold!

If I was you I would try both on and go from there. I tried a ballgown first and fell in love and decided to buy it but as the days went by I was feeling bad for not trying different styles and types so I decided to go back and try on some different ones and I was so lucky because they let me change my dress Smiley smile So try a bunch and then decide!

I think once you try it on you will know for sure. I was the bride that wanted no princess poofy gown..guess what I got.

yupp a princess poofy gown. I think its true that once you have the different types for your first time out looking then you will have an idea of what you truly like and dislike.
