Menu Help!! - is fish on the menu weird?

So here's the run down - our venue includes a 4 course plated dinner. Everything on the menu is gourmet. However our favorite dish on the menu was a white fish that was outstanding. They are only letting us pick 1 dish for everyone, or we can do 50/50 with another dish which means that I get steak,...

So here's the run down - our venue includes a 4 course plated dinner. Everything on the menu is gourmet. However our favorite dish on the menu was a white fish that was outstanding. They are only letting us pick 1 dish for everyone, or we can do 50/50 with another dish which means that I get steak, you get fish, the person next to you gets steak, the person next to them gets fish, and so on. It's every other seat. It's a dumb setup but I gotta work with it.

and YES they do let me get all the dietary restrictions/vegetarian/allergy orders in beforehand so those people get something special.

If you're wondering the outcome of this thread. I decided on doing 100% steak option for the entree. It's hard to mess up steak and I think most will be pleased with it. Now do I do the one that soaked in wine or the one with a pasilla chile demi-glace? Smiley laugh

    Can you just call the venue and see what your other options are?

    ETA: Im With @GymRat! I eat lamb chops all the time. All Americans do not eat the same but when you are trying to please the majority beef and chicken are usually the go to entrees and others are added in addition to if they are available.

    I think the reason that beef, pork, chicken, and fish are the main proteins here in the USA is because the other options are much more expensive. I absolutely love lamb, duck, and goose. But it's cost-prohibitive to eat often. My local grocery store sells bone-in lamb for $29.99 a pound. Half that weight is bone, so you are paying $60 a pound for the edible portion. That's an expensive dinner! Duck is even more expensive, and goose is even more than that! My family does goose for Christmas, and it's about $100 for the smallest one available.

    I served Duck and Fish as my mains in addition to Vegetarian.

    I also served Beef Sliders, Raw Seafood Bar etc.

    @MiniMe - how is this thread indicative of what posters like to eat?

    People are just suggesting the safe alternative to fish that more people might enjoy since a lot of people have fish aversions.

    No one has said they only eat steak and chicken... those were just the options provided by the OP.

    My mother only eats chicken, beef, and pork. She claims she doesn't like fish, veal, lamb, etc. These people exist. They are annoying, but it's a know your crowd situation.

    @MiniMe - I'm sorry we don't thrill you with our meal choices.

    Chicken and steak are safe and fairly cost effective. BBQ and pasta are budget friendly. That's why you see those things a lot. It has nothing to do with the overall American palette. You're making generalizations of a very niche selection of people.

    I'm so confused. I eat lamb frequently and see it on the menu at restaurants all the time! Pork is actually our #1 go to and we make pork chops several times a week.

    I would NOT take wedding entrees as indicative of what Americans eat and don't eat. At any large event (weddings included), you need to try to appeal to the largest amount of your guests. That's why the standard "boring" wedding meal options are what they are! You don't want to deal with a bunch of guests saying "oh I don't eat that can I have something else?" so you mitigate those objections by choosing a selection of entrees that appeal to the most people possible. That's all it is Smiley smile

    I just wanted to add that steak and chicken and pork don't have to be boring. Knowing that FH's family pretty much only eats these things, we opted to have 3 different steak options (filet, rib eye, NY strip), one fish option (sea bass), one spiced lamb rack option (for my parents), and one chicken option for the really unadventurous (grilled herb chicken).

    I'm a pretty diverse eater, as are my family (the fish and lamb are for them) but I am still excited about the options available, and will be personally going with steak when the day arrives. I was also very lucky that we did a restaurant for a venue rather than a caterer. I would have been rather down if I was limited to chicken or veggies. I hate chicken.

    Fork Smashed Red Skin Potatoes

    Steamed Asparagus and Julienne Carrots

    Rosemary Jus and Creamy Horseradish

    Crispy Fried Tobacco Onions

    Free Range Chicken Breast Roasted

    Fingerling Potato and Prosciutto Hash

    Haricot Vert and Roasted Red Peppers

    Thyme Veloute

    Barbecued Salmon Filet

    Smoked Tomato Butter Sauce

    Pepper Bacon and Hoop Cheese Grit Cake

    Haricot Vert and Ratatouille Style Squashes

    Sun Dried Tomato Risotto Cakes (Veggie Option)

    Topped with Spinach Sauteed in Olive Oil and Garlic

    with Crispy Fried Leeks and Portobello Chips

    They did have a bone in pork chop option at our tasting but it wasn't as good as the other dishes!

    WHY can't you change venues? And why didn't you know about this when you booked? Look, if you want to please the most people who are taking the time and money to come to your destination wedding, you should offer chicken and veggie and let them choose. I say chicken because many people have a red meat restriction. I don't know of very many who actually have a restriction (for health reasons) against chicken. That is the safest option and those who don't like chicken can choose vegetarian. That's how you will please the most, IMO. But again, I find it ridiculous that you're not open to changing venues.

    I would normally choose safer options for a wedding but in this case the safe options were quite "safe" and boring in flavour and we wanted something more different so we chose the: Seared Arctic char with Julienne Vegetables in Lobster Biqsue and the Mollasses Glazed Duck Breast over Rice Pilaf and Stir Fried Vegetables.

    The Steak was just steak and potatoes. The Pork Chop (while great cut of meat) was plain in taste and just salty with au jus and potatoes. Stuff Chicken breast would not go well with our Asian families as we prefer dark meat.

    But for me the key was that everyone had an option they could eat. I think there may have been 1 person who did not like fish or duck and was able to eat the Gnocchi pasta and said it was really good. *shrugs*

    @elizabeth I don't want to change venues, it's too beautiful and perfect of a place and I love all the menu options. We want something a little more offbeat than chicken or beef and potatoes. Every dish on our menu options are offbeat and we love them all. If you know Spanish here's some of our entree option in the attached photo. The fish we like is a white fish with a poblano sauce, veggies, parmesean... in a less fancy way to describe it haha

    I really think you should have a vegetarian option. I know a lot of people who won't eat fish or steak. As long as you have a vegetarian option, I think fish would be fine.
