Menu Help!! - is fish on the menu weird?

So here's the run down - our venue includes a 4 course plated dinner. Everything on the menu is gourmet. However our favorite dish on the menu was a white fish that was outstanding. They are only letting us pick 1 dish for everyone, or we can do 50/50 with another dish which means that I get steak,...

So here's the run down - our venue includes a 4 course plated dinner. Everything on the menu is gourmet. However our favorite dish on the menu was a white fish that was outstanding. They are only letting us pick 1 dish for everyone, or we can do 50/50 with another dish which means that I get steak, you get fish, the person next to you gets steak, the person next to them gets fish, and so on. It's every other seat. It's a dumb setup but I gotta work with it.

and YES they do let me get all the dietary restrictions/vegetarian/allergy orders in beforehand so those people get something special.

**EDIT**

If you're wondering the outcome of this thread. I decided on doing 100% steak option for the entree. It's hard to mess up steak and I think most will be pleased with it. Now do I do the one that soaked in wine or the one with a pasilla chile demi-glace? Smiley laugh

The 50/50 serving option is the weirdest thing I've ever heard. Unless you know that you have equal numbers of fish and steak lovers coming, someone is going to end up disappointed that there wasn't enough of the entrée they would have preferred to go around.

Of the 66 adults at our wedding, the breakdown was as follows:

    76% - filet mignon

    20% - salmon

    4% - vegetarian

We had an entire table full of people who had picked beef. If entrées had been served 50/50 to each table, half of that table would have been roaming the reception hall trying to trade their fish entrées away...and unable to do so because it worked out that our group had a strong preference for beef.

If it we're a duo plate where every guest got both beef and fish, that would be different. But I don't think having two entrées without giving your guests a choice of which one they actually want and the venue providing the quantities of each entree based on your guests' preferences is a good plan.

While I absolutely love fish, many do not and/or suffer from seafood allergies. So if no guest option is available, then I would suggest you play it safe and opt for only chicken.

I personally think doing 50/50 is rather risky if you aren't able to accommodate everyone's request, but if you have understanding family/friends who know they may not get their preferred selection, then go for it.

Eeee. I'm so sorry. But I really hate fish. I'd be pretty bummed if I got stuck with it and nobody with a steak would trade me.

That said though, if I were with FH, he'd definitely trade me no questions asked, so maybe it's worth the risk if you love it that much. Just make sure the sides are substantial and there's bread or something to fill up on for those who just won't eat it.

I love lamb, and I especially love when weddings have mini-lamb chop apps! Yummy!

And we're serving pork as one of our main entree choices... at our tasting it was fucking incredible. Offering pork, filet, and flounder with crab meat (plus veggie for anyone that needs it!)

The 50-50 option is ridiculous and completely horseshit. I'd either ask to pay more for duet service or guest choice. If neither of those options work, time for a new venue.

ETA: i live by the ocean and eat seafood all the time. But I'm picky about what I get and how it's prepared. I would not like having fish as the only option.

Another ETA: this is a pet peeve of mine - clearly the venue isn't "perfect" if they have ridiculous rules and you can't offer your guests a choice of meal.... perfect implies there is nothing you would change at all. Seeing you've tried to change the menu thing and posted here because you didn't get a good answer means the venue isn't freaking perfect.

    @sleepy - LOL shots fired!

OP you never answered my question.

What are you going to do if you choose move forward with your idea to take orders in advance and hope that the venue will roll with it...

ETA: ...and the venue turns down or ignores your orders?

Geez. And to think I was fretting that strip steak and everything crusted tuna (plus vegetarian) wasn't enough...

La Grosera, sorry! This thread went where I didn't expect it to!

I probably wont take orders because I know my FH's guests wont give me their food options until 2 days before and it will be too much of a hassle. My FH was just in a wedding for one of his friends in Mexico and he found out 3 weeks before he was a groomsman! And we never got a formal invite to it!

So to avoid any potential trouble I think I'm going to do 100% steak option, have unique stuff for the appetizers and desert. And yes for the hundredth time - there will be silent veggie options for those with allergies/dietary restrictions, and those people have already told me. what they can/can't eat.

What is a "silent veggie" option? Does that mean that only vegetarians get the veggie option? What if someone is a meat-eater, but can't eat steak and you didn't give them the option of a veggie meal?

On my RSVP I am asking if any one has any allergies or dietary restriction. I would hope that they mention a red meat restriction on that RSVP.

How about just giving them a choice of steak or vegetarian? What's the problem with doing that? I don't understand.

The caterer does not let me give the orders beforehand or let guests order at the table. They serve 1 main dish and the only ones that get veggies are the ones that told me beforehand about their needs. It is not ideal, but it is what it is.

Right, but your RSVP can say steak or veggie and then you can tell your caterer this many people are the veggies.

Nicole, the great thing about Internet forums is that anyone can respond to you. You should know that by now.

You really need to find something to do with your time... monitoring when people update their avatar is a bit creepy.

LOL, like I'm not going to notice when you tell me to buzz off in one post and 4 minutes later showing up with a different avatar. It's not called monitoring. It's called being cognitively intact.

I don't think the view from your venue can be that great lol that you would settle for just one main dish. I eat all kinds of everything and any time I have had gone to a wedding with a plated dish, I always choose the veggie option.....it's the least likely thing to give me food poisoning lol.
