Menu Help!! - is fish on the menu weird?

Ale, on June 6, 2017 at 9:33 AM Posted in Planning 0 144

So here's the run down - our venue includes a 4 course plated dinner. Everything on the menu is gourmet. However our favorite dish on the menu was a white fish that was outstanding. They are only letting us pick 1 dish for everyone, or we can do 50/50 with another dish which means that I get steak, you get fish, the person next to you gets steak, the person next to them gets fish, and so on. It's every other seat. It's a dumb setup but I gotta work with it.

and YES they do let me get all the dietary restrictions/vegetarian/allergy orders in beforehand so those people get something special.

**EDIT**

If you're wondering the outcome of this thread. I decided on doing 100% steak option for the entree. It's hard to mess up steak and I think most will be pleased with it. Now do I do the one that soaked in wine or the one with a pasilla chile demi-glace? Smiley laugh

I love fish! I don't feel like it's the best option tho since many Do not or are particular with fish so I did chicken and steak.

Aww man I think it is unfortunate that they will not let guests have the option. I would much prefer the fish but I think it is safer to do beef or chicken in this scenario

Could you do something like a surf and turf? Not everyone is a fan of fish. I would be quite happy with it. Smiley smile

I think only offering fish is risky - I do not eat it and I think it could be kind of smelly to be honest...

Why would fish be "weird?" Most places I'd be more likely to order seafood over a basic chicken dish. I think it's a "know your crowd" situation, as some people really dislike seafood. I would go for the 50/50 option so that people can switch if they're unable to eat or don't like fish.

FWIW we are offering three choices and most have ordered the fish.

Sorry, but yes. Yes it would. I *loathe* fish, can't even stand the smell of it. At least do the 50/50, and for sure have a vegetarian option, because there are probably people who don't eat either fish or steak.

Why would fish be weird? I love a surf and turf combo instead of having two meats.

Also, with the 50/50 option - what happens if you have people wanting more of the steak than the fish (like a 60/40 scenario)? Are they only making enough of each dish to cover 50% of the crowd?

How would you choose who gets fish versus steak if you did a 50/50 option?

If you only have 1 option (which I think it a mistake), then your safest bet is Chicken. And the fact that a second option must mean 50/50 which means you could run out of something is also a concern.

Some people don't eat red meat or seafood etc.

We served fish but we also had a second meat option and a vegetarian option which we could order the day of, so no limit on the items.

@Mrs. Fall Bride - for those that do not like fish, yes - it has a smell, a very pungent one that can overwhelm a room depending how sensitive you are to it.

ETA - I'm not saying do not offer a fish option - we had one at our wedding, along with chicken marsala and prime rib. We did not notice a smell, but we had a large ballroom and the food was on one side of the room. But, for those that are very sensitive to the smell of fish, then it can become noticeable in a room.

I agree it's weird they aren't giving guests the option to choose! My wedding is in Mexico ( I'm from US, FH is Mexican) and i know in the US you can have two meats on a plate, take orders, and get really specific with it. But apparently it's not normal in Mexico to do that and I either have to pick 1 thing for all or every other seat is one thing and the others is another thing. I'm leaning towards the 50/50 option.

And the fish totally did not smell! Our families love seafood but you know...trying to please everyone lol

Of course vegetarians and other food limitations are being noted and those are getting special plates.

I think it would be risky, but who cares! It's a celebration of YOU and what you like.

My favorite food is tacos, and dammit we're having tacos and enchiladas. I know not everyone will be happy with this, we've already received some complaints. You do what you like!

I think fish is fine, as long as there is a vegetarian option- we are doing steak or fish or vegetarian and there was ~5% of guest order the veggie dish, the other 2 options were about even #s

Smelly? What kind of restaurants are you going to? I could understand shellfish - when we pick crabs there's definitely a fishy smell. But not whitefish lol.

To clarify: 50/50 in this scenario means that I get steak, you get fish, the person next to you gets steak, the person next to them gets fish, and so on. They aren't letting guests choose on the spot. It's every other seat. BUT I'm thinking if I take as many orders as I can, or at least note people's preferences on the seating chart, what's the harm in giving my orders to them beforehand? Worth a shot right?

If guests could order on the spot I would totally go for that! I keep asking but keep getting a no.
