Menu Help!! - is fish on the menu weird?

So here's the run down - our venue includes a 4 course plated dinner. Everything on the menu is gourmet. However our favorite dish on the menu was a white fish that was outstanding. They are only letting us pick 1 dish for everyone, or we can do 50/50 with another dish which means that I get steak,...

So here's the run down - our venue includes a 4 course plated dinner. Everything on the menu is gourmet. However our favorite dish on the menu was a white fish that was outstanding. They are only letting us pick 1 dish for everyone, or we can do 50/50 with another dish which means that I get steak, you get fish, the person next to you gets steak, the person next to them gets fish, and so on. It's every other seat. It's a dumb setup but I gotta work with it.

and YES they do let me get all the dietary restrictions/vegetarian/allergy orders in beforehand so those people get something special.

**EDIT**

If you're wondering the outcome of this thread. I decided on doing 100% steak option for the entree. It's hard to mess up steak and I think most will be pleased with it. Now do I do the one that soaked in wine or the one with a pasilla chile demi-glace? Smiley laugh

Hmm that's a tough question. For me, I feel like people are people, and I can easily imagine a situation where everyone is looking at their neighbor's dish and thinking, "That looks better than mine!" At least when they've made the choice themselves they know they picked it, but to just randomly be served something will probably disappoint some people.

Personally, I don't like fish, so I would be sad if I went to a wedding where that was the only option. But I would be even sadder if the person next to me got a steak lol!

You said earlier though that your crowd are big seafood eaters, though, so hopefully it won't be an issue. That's crazy that those are the only two options!

I don't think it is weird to choose a fish dish. There are people who don't eat fish, but there are also people who don't eat chicken or red meat. There is seriously no way that you can please everyone if you are only able to choose 1 option.

I like fish and I like steak, but I need to be in the mood for it. If I'm sitting by someone that got the steak and I know I'm getting the fish but not feeling it, I will be disappointed and likely won't eat because of fear of upsetting my stomach.

This set up is weird and inconsiderate of guests.

Would the venue be willing to do a duo-plate? A slightly smaller portion of both steak AND fish?

How many guests are you inviting?

I don't think the fish is weird, I think the style of service is weird. But it is not "a celebration of what you like" You've probably figured that out by now.....

I don't think (as a caterer) I'd pick fish for everyone; when we did one entree, we always suggested chicken.

Could you do the fish that you loved as the appetizer? Maybe a salad with the fish on top but with a plain salad as an option?

I don't think its weird to have fish but what could be weird is if you have a married couple who both want fish. The venue is putting the fish or steak by seat not preference so now you will either have to seat the couple separate or force one to choose steak when they want fish. That's weird

I wouldn't be going to a wedding where I didn't have an option for food that wasn't a buffet, especially if fish was dinner. As soon as I found that out I'd RSVP no. I don't care whose wedding it is I wouldn't be going, or I'd be bringing in food in my bag. Chicken or beef is the safest way to go.

This is so strange. So if you have more than one entree, it's randomly divided up so that you still don't get a choice? I wouldn't be happy with that. Getting stuck with an entree you don't want while watching others get to eat it would suck. Can you pay extra to have everyone choose between fish, steak, and veggie on their RSVP cards? I would actually rather see everyone get chicken than this weird lottery, but it would be much more preferable for everyone to have a choice.

This doesn't sound like it's a "Mexico" thing, it sounds like a ridiculous limitation set by the venue you chose. While a lot of people love fish (me included), others despise it (My FH). He swears it smells when it doesn't so I understand how fish haters feel. If you can take orders beforehand and have either the beef or fish for your guests, than that would be ideal. Every other guest is a horrible idea - don't do it.

If you only have one choice, I think chicken is your best bet.

I'm sorry, but I would never have my reception at a place like this. Guests should be able to choose what they eat if it isn't a duet plate. Counting on your guests trading with other guests is risky because what if no one else wants the fish they were served. This is unfair to your guests and not something I would pay for.

ETA: This also isn't a Mexico thing; it's a venue thing. You need a new venue. If people are flying to Mexico for your DW, you need to go the extra mile, IMO, and not giving them a choice of dinner at the reception is not doing that.

I think you can make this work. On your RSVP card, give the option of whatever you decide (Steak or Fish) and then a Vegetarian option. That way people can decide. It blows my mind that the caterer can prepare food that way, but you can't do Steak, Fish & Vegetarian as your options.

The weird 50/50 food lottery is a definite no-go. That is just asking for everyone to feel like they got shafted. Even as someone who likes both beef and fish, I would really hate just being randomly assigned one or the other. If they absolutely, positively refuse to budge from this bizarre paradigm, I would either move venues if possible or if that is not possible I would just give everyone chicken. It's boring, but at least it's not going to lead to hard feelings with guests feeling like they got screwed over.

No Aly, I don't think this has anything to do with Mexico. This is the venue setting very strange and weird food limitations.

Is this a restaurant or a hotel/resort? When is your wedding? Can you look into another venue?

I can't move venues or caterers - so that option is out.

I thinking moving toward a 100% steak or chicken option is probably best, if I cannot take orders. Trying to avoid chicken because how boring!!

I ask everyone in Mexico, they just tell me "yeah that's how it is"

Chicken or vegetarian seems to be the best option for you. Stop blaming it on Mexico.

Frankly, I would not want to spend (what is probably) a huge amount of money somewhere so inflexible and unaccommodating.

To be honest, I'd be a little disappointed to fly all the way to Mexico for a DW to be served chicken. I'd still go with steak and have a veggie option for those with dietary restrictions.

I have personally been to 2 weddings in Mexico, and I know others on WW have gotten married there or are planning weddings there. I have never heard of this being an issue, I don't think it's a "Mexico" thing.
