Marriage on a holy day?

Andrea, on January 17, 2012 at 12:11 PM Posted in Planning 0 6

I am trying to book a Catholic Church ceremony site and need to avoid March 30, 2013 as it is Holy Saturday, the day before Easter. Does anyone know if the day before Palm Sunday is a Holy day as well?

Palm Sunday is the official start of Holy Week, so the Saturday before is not a holiday. I will caution you, however, to speak with the church and make sure they are ok with doing a wedding the day before Holy Week starts. Also, be aware that many guests that would otherwise like to be there may not come due to religious obligations. For us, we have a trip every year during Holy Week, ending on Easter. It's never easy planning a wedding near or on a holiday.

I had a friend of mine who got married almost 3 years ago, the day before Easter Sunday and they had an extremely hard time finding anyone who would marry them. Could not get married in a church. If you are thinking about doing that, I would start talking to people now. You might have to move your date.

I strongly suggest you talk to your Parish as it is really up to them whether they will do a wedding that day or not. And like Katie Bug said- guest will be less likely to attend a wedding the weekend of a holiday.

Like others have said, check with your Parish directly. My hometown church was VERY strict on days that we could and could not get married but the church we're getting married at (in key west) is much more relaxed and flexible on days and times we can get married.

Our parish would not let us get married at all during lent or advent, so double check with your parish. Yes, Palm Sunday is the start of Holy Week, so it's not a holy day.
