Looking for pr Destination Wedding Advice

Inti, on March 23, 2019 at 1:53 PM Posted in Planning 0 8
Hello all,

We are planning our Destination Wedding for Puerto Rico for 10/27/19.

We thought we were on the right path and took a short weekend trip to PR and visited 5 locations we found here on WW.

Turns out we were being naive and they all blow our budget to smithereens. Yes, we could increase it, but we don't want too.

Thankfully, we stumbled upon the idea of renting a villa/home for the wedding/reception. This is a genius idea. Not only is it more budget friendly, it is much more intimate, and fun. Frankly, I'm disappointed in myself that we hadn't thought of it beforehand.

We've got a small team already consisting of the soon to be sister in law, her BF, the future in laws, and so on, but we've also begun interviewing wedding planners in earnest. Even this interview process has helped open up our eyes to all the challenges we face, but also the possibilities we never dreamed of. It's such a big task, there is no way we can do this alone.

That's where this post comes in.

What should I be asking the wedding planner? The venues and vendors? What seemingly minor details should I pay attention too?

If you had a destination wedding in PR and have any tips or recommendations, we would love to hear from you.

Thank you all in advance.

I'm getting married there next summer. I first had an ideal budget then researched venues to see if it was even possible. I just need to taste test food and cake then I'm done so I know ways to slim the budget Smiley winking I can maybe give you the names I was given because I refuse to overpay (happens when they know Americans are coming). If you don't mind me asking, what is your wedding budget for venue and all the vendors? (you can message me if you want).

Hey Inti! I’m so sorry that none of the venues that you went to visit worked out, but a great idea to rent a home to host the ceremony/reception. Make sure when you are booking that you disclose your reason for renting the property i.e. your wedding, to ensure that they allow events to be held there.

Planning a destination wedding can be pricey, so it’s important to weigh up all your options before booking anything!

I’ve found a couple of articles about planning on a budget that may help you and your SO while in the planning process!

Sonia, very kindly, seems willing to help with any questions you may have so far. Have you reached out to her?

Hello! I work in events and I think there can be a lot of challenges when it comes to destination weddings that people do not factor in when they make this decision. I am actually helping my friends with their timeline and vendors for a wedding in the Bahamas next week and they have had a very challenging time getting everything in place. I have never been to Puerto Rico so it could be a totally different story from the Bahamas but we have found that vendors in the Bahamas take an incredibly long time to get back to you and they do not really believe in contracts like we do here in the states so it can cause a lot of stress. I would make sure you find a wedding planner who can work with vendors and get them to sign on the dotted line.

I would work with a wedding planner who is very familiar with Puerto Rico and has tons of vendor contacts (photographer, videographer, cakes, catering, bands, djs, etc). They will be able to get you the best vendors and give you peace of mind that these people will actually be there on your wedding day. I would ask the wedding planner what contacts they have in Puerto Rico, samples of past weddings, how many weddings they have executed in the past, what they find to be the most challenging aspect of wedding planning (this can give you good insight), and also ask them about how they can help you to manage guest travel. A good wedding planner will be able to make sure all of your vendors work as a collaborative team and they act as the captain keeping everyone informed and on task. A wedding planner will help you make sure they all arrive on time to set-up on time, etc. I would ask them to send you a previous timeline they have done in past so you can see if they are able to do this effectively.

My friends have been so stressed out by family and friends texting them non stop about how to get around the island where to stay etc. so I would hire a wedding planner that may be able to help you type up a document and who is an expert on the island. Also, locals tend to help locals so finding someone local could mean better deals for you and provide you a lot more ease when your planning! I hope this helps! Feel free to message me if you have any other questions.

Sonia, thank you for your reply amd congrats on your engagement.

As crazy as it sounds, an hour and a half after I posted, my fiance had a medical emergency that resulted in an emergency room visit that kept her in the hospital until today. She was actually discharged about an hour ago. She is now home resting comfortably, but I didn't want to keep you all waiting. It may take a while for me to reply to you all but I will. Thank you for your replies.

    Thank you, Inti.

Omg! I'm so sorry to hear. I hope she's doing much better. Her health is obviously more important than wedding talk right now.

Sorry for the late reply. As you know, between life, work, and planning, it gets hectic. We have already experienced some of what you mentioned. But now that we got the wedding planner we are moving along with the planning. Thank you for the info!!

    Hello Sonia,

There have been a few bumps on the road but we are well on our way to planning our destination wedding. Venue has been selected and reserved! Smiley smile Wedding dress is in the bag. My suit needs some tailoring but pretty much done. Right now we're looking at food and DJs. Have options for both so let's see where that goes.
