Is it tacky to have a wedding registry/bridal shower if you already live together?

stacedeezy, on April 30, 2015 at 6:51 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 26

Honest question. Somebody asked me when I was having my bridal shower, and I hadn't really thought about it. I made a registry because TK told me to on my wedding checklist, but honestly I forgot about it and didn't expect anyone to buy me anything, because we already live together. There are things we still need and have put off buying..

I live with my FH but we still could use a lot of kitchen things and some of our stuff is really old and worn and could be replaced. So we will put together a registry.

Nope. A lot of couples live together, they still have registries. You can register for upgrade/replacement and luxury items, that sorta thing.

No it's not. It's common for couples to live together before marriage. In fact, it's a good way to upgrade and get stuff that's "yours" as opposed to the stuff you consolidated when you moved in together. You don't have to have a registry at all though if you don't want one. If people ask where you are registered tell them you didn't register and they will most likely give you cash or a gift card to BBB. However, if you don't register there is no reason for a shower because it is literally for guests to "shower" the bride with gifts. Hope this helped.

I don't think it's tacky at all. Since you said you put off buying items, I definitely think that you should make a registry.

We had one - and we've been together for years. I live in a boxed-present-giving area, so it was a no-brainer. It was nice to get some upgrades and some new things that belong to "us."

Agree. We live together and already own our home. We still made a gift registry because some people prefer to give a gift rather than money. Are you going on a honeymoon? Another option that we did was made a honeymoon registry with carnival cruise. People can go on there and give us money towards activities, and many other things!

Definitely agree with everyone else- FH and I have lived together for just about 4 years and had no qualms about having a registry. We are replacing a lot of old stuff that was our beginner set- I am so excited for new pots and pans and some new dishes that actually match!

ETA: I actually don't agree with everyone else - I personally would not do a honeymoon registry in lieu of a regular registry. But that topic has been beaten to death here on WW.

Nope not tacky. We will be doing it, as there are a lot of things our parents gave us from their kitchens that were extras they didn't need so we didn't have to buy a bunch of stuff. That was really sweet of them, but I would love a good set of dishes rather than a mismatched set of randoms. That sort of thing, very acceptable. We're going to register for really nice sheets, a comforter set, that sort of thing. All stuff that I want to get but would never justify doing on my own.

... Kinda off topic. But why was someone asking when you are having a bridal shower?

@Kristen. I have absolutely no idea. It's five freaking months from now (and this was like in January). It's one of my bridesmaids, and she is just...way more excited about my wedding than I am, lol.

    ETA: wrong word oops

We've lived together for over 5 years but we're still registering for a few (7) things. Everything else is going on the honeymoon registry so we can be gifted money to start saving again.

Not at all. When FH and I moved into our townhouse we combined all of our crappy, worn to death items. We have mostly everything, but over half of it should really be replaced. I dont think it is rude to register for items you need for your new life together!

No it's not tacky. I don't live with my future FH however, I don't believe I deserve anymore than someone who does. Quite few of my friends are getting married this year and out of the 4 weddings happening this year - two couples don't live together and two do; still plan to get things things for all brides and (future married couples).

Definitely not tacky. We are upgrading several items. However, I did register for some pots that I really want from Williams-Sonoma. I really hope I get them.
