Is it okay to wear your rings when you wash your hands?

I've been taking off my white gold engagement ring when I wash my hands and shower but FH freaks out because he thinks I'll lose it, forget it, or drop it down the drain if I don't keep it on. So is it okay to wear your ring when you wash your hands and/or take a shower? What do you all do?

@gymrat, why take it off when lifting weights?

I only take mine off to shower, just because it gets caught in my hair. Sometimes I will take it off when I go to bed because my hands get really cold which makes it swivel around my finger, and that's annoying to me...also a little scary. I haven't spend much time at the beach since we've been engaged but we're going to Cancun for our honeymoon, so I'll probably leave my ring in the safe in our room most of the time.

It depends on what you mean by "is it okay":

    * Soap will not hurt the ring.

    * Soap will create a film that will temporarily make the diamond less sparkly, although this can be dealt with the next time you get it cleaned.

    * If soap gets under your ring and therefore doesn't get rinsed off properly, it may irritate your finger. Also, if dampness builds up under the ring, it may be irritating. Both of these things don't happen to everyone, but some people seem to be sensitive. If it happens to you, you can make sure to take the ring off once a day and wash, rinse, and dry the finger thoroughly. If that's not enough, you could leave your ring off at night to let it get thoroughly dry.

I personally leave my ring on all the time. I would certainly avoid taking it off except at home, because the chance of dropping it down a drain or forgetting it would outweigh the minor issues described above.

KMC, I wore my ring when I was working out on the monkey bars. The rings cut off blood flow to my fingers and I had swollen, purple/red fingers for almost a week. I'm guessing lifting weights would have the same effect. ???

I take my engagement ring off if I'm doing a lot of dishes usually (always set it in the same place) or if I'm gardening, camping or fishing. I always leave it in a specific place and I always put it back on right away. But other than that, I don't take it off.

When I first got engaged I would take it off everytime I washed my hands. But then I was like " I can't be taking this ring off constantly for the rest of my life!" So now I take it off when I go to sleep or when I am about to shower.

I hate the feeling of having water trapped underneath a ring, so I always take mine off. Not to mention, my ring is rose gold and I have a manganite stone, which are both softer than white gold and diamonds.

Our jeweler told me that your ring should be the last thing you put on in the morning before going out the door and the first thing you take off when coming home. No sense in having needless wear and tear on your stones and the metal. With this method i have it on when washing my hands through out the day at work, but since its the first thing i take off when i get home I never shower with it on. This really keeps my stones secure in it's setting and keeps my ring super shinny. Plus conditioners, oils, lotions, chemicals, etc. can put a film coating on the diamonds too and get in all the nooks and crannies of the stones/setting.

I only take my ring off when I shower, work out, wash dishes and sleep. I read wearing them while in the shower may compromise their quality after a while because of all the hot water, steam and different soaps. I only take them off when washing dishes because I dont want food bits to touch my ring! It seems gross to me. Its definitely fine to wear them while washing your hands.

Hi Amanda. I struggled with this very thing myself. FH freak out everytime he saw it on my dresser, counter, or window seal, etc. Now in my opinion, it really isn't a good idea to wear it while showering, washing dishes, or doing any kind of cleaning. My ring is White gold as well and I am taking it in for a cleaning and to be replated in a week and then putting it put away until the day of. Now with white gold, they tend to lose their luster and will turn an "yellow" gold. And I can honestly say that any kind of abrasive cleaner will speed up the process. So just be careful. Maybe wear gloves if you don't want to take your ring off anymore?

I also have white gold, and I never take it off. I know I am SUPPOSED to, but I have the brain of a firefly sometimes and I would misplace it. So I keep it on at all times, even once when I spray-painted something -__-. So far it's been fine! I do need to get it cleaned more often.

I only take mine off for the gym, cleaning, cooking with ground beef, or putting on lotion. I think the lotion gunks it up quicker than soap. The jeweler gave FH a jar of cleaning solution for my ring though so I clean it once a month anyway.

I have always been taught not to wear your rings for the 3S: sleep, sweat, shower. I do not get mine wet. I was gifted a 5-pack of wooden ring holders and have those around our house. When I am at school and wash my hands, I put my ring either in my pocket or the small inner section of my purse. It is annoying sometimes to take off and put on but my ring is super sparkly and I want to make sure it looks its best for my whole life Smiley smile

I used to take my ring off every time I washed my hands! Then eventually I got tired of it and I got better at it all. I do still take my ring off when I shower, put on lotion, cook raw meat, and do anything messy.

I wash my hands a million times a day so I keep mine on when doing that and showering. The only time I take it off is when I apply lotion or cooking with raw meat, oils etc

Keep a jewelry holder or bowl around the house. Otherwise, do not take it off anywhere outside of the house. I made that mistake and lost my engagement ring within the first week or two of having it. Barley managed to find it after the incident.

I keep it on when I wash my hands, but take it off when I work out and shower. I have a rubber band I wear when I work out because I feel naked without a ring now.
