IS it appropriate to use calligraphy font printed on envelopes

Mrs.SoonToBeW., on December 7, 2012 at 2:15 PM Posted in Planning 0 13

I'm trying to decide is it approrpiate to print my own outer and inner envelopes with a calligraphy front from the computer. What are your suggestions or ideas?

Technically, things should be handwritten. I'm going the calligraphy font route myself, though, because my handwriting is heinous. I mean...even when I try really hard to make it look nice, it looks terrible. Also, I'm always at a computer, so I almost never handwrite anything longer than a couple sentences, making my hand QUICKLY get tired (which then leads to my handwriting looking even worse).

So, yeah, I vote for computer fonts. As long as it isn't on a printed label, it'll look great.

We printed directly on the envelopes since we had 80 ones to send out and could not imagine writing all those names and addresses. Most people whom we have received wedding invites in the last 3 years or so are going this route.

This was from a post a long time ago and I think it's just the neatest idea. One bride on here used it successfully with a pretty gold pen.

Theres no such thing as handwritten calligraphy coming from me - its all from a computer. absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Thats what i did for my STD's and that's what i'm doing for my invitations.

I am still debating this one too. I have good handwriting so I was hoping I could pull off a fancy enough look but I have also seen the tutorials on the printing and tracing option which is cool.

Heres a question- do invites always have the return address in the same writing- is it weird to get like a stamp of our address for the back flap but have the handwritten on front? Or should it all be the same?

I'm using clear labels for my invites with the calligraphy font primarily because I have 107 invites I have to address and I am not able to write for that long and make it legible. imho the stamp on the back for return address is great! even with hand written fronts.

I printed with calligraphy font because my handwriting just looks stupid on a formal invitation.. almost embarrasing even!

There are probably a lot of people that would disagree and say "no, no, no!" but "I don't care, I don't care, I don't care!"

We did this. He was working crazy OT when we were getting ready to send ours out, and I have a problem in my right arm that makes writing more than a little here and there very painful. We found a font that went with the look of the invites, and I was able to match the color almost perfectly to the darker brown that our addy was in on the back flap. No one said word one to us about the envelopes being computer printed. I wanted to do the thing where you go over it with a pen, but my mother was dead set against a metallic and I was running low on time, so we skipped that part. Thinking of doing it for our holiday cards, though.

This is one area where I think traditional etiquette doesn't make a bit of sense.

Etiquette wise it's supposed to be handwritten because it's "more personal" BUT the most formal invitations I get are done by a professional calligrapher so I fail to see how paying someone else is more personal than using your personal computer at home to print :p

So I say PRINT THEM THANGS!

We did pay for calligraphy, but so far very few people have seemed to notice! Haha. I say screw it and print those suckers.

Yes it's appropriate. The way I see it, years ago, people did not have the means to print pretty fonts on labels or directly on envelope and make it look just like the hand written one. If I only had 20 invitations to send out, I MIGHT hand write them since I used to do calligraphy for certificates, but it's been a while and I wouldn't want to mess up. Do a test one written and printed and see if it's way different.

Good point Leanna. I know I get the invitation usually don't pay much attention to the envelope. My friend was so set on getting hers mailed from a town nearby named Loveville just so that would be on her invitations.
