Is it annoying for guests to take off shoes at beach wedding ??

Suzanne, on January 24, 2013 at 5:47 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 12

I'm having a beach wedding on pompano beach. On the sand. Has anyone had a beach "sand" wedding and found it was annoying for guests? In a little concerned.

My sister got married on a beach several years ago. She made an adorable sign with attached basket that said "shoes optional" The people who wanted to wear their shoes did and the people that didnt left them in the basket. Worked out great

I've been to two. One we were slightly late to the ceremony, so I was in flip flops and just slipped them off. The other, I just kept my shoes on, but it wasn't terrible.

Are you just having the ceremony in the sand then going inside? Perhaps just have some towels to help get sand off their feet available, but I don't think it should be a big deal. Warn folks that it's on the beach, but you should be fine.

I never even thought about this! LOL The waterfall area of our venue does not allow heels so I may have to tell one FSIL about that!

Yes it's on the sand and its like 100-115 steps til the chairs! I made a sign that says "place your toes in the sand, grab a drink for your hand" and a large cooler filled with waters is next to it. In so stressed about it bc parking has become a major issue as the date I'm getting married is 2/17 , a holiday weekend and parking is slim to none! So I now have to arrange for 2 coach buses to transport all 110 people from the reception hall in Deerfield to the beach in pompano. (20 min drive) and then back! I feel like my guests are gonna hate me! They may be on that damn bus for an hour at least! (30 min each way plus time it takes to get everyone on and off the buses).

Can you maybe offer flip flops?

I like my feet in the sand if I am there to play, but for a wedding, I'd want to wash my feet afterward or I would have just worn flip flops (which aren't the best protection, but they help!). Plus, if the sand is really hot, your guests might appreciate something to keep their toes from burning.. Smiley smile

Good question! I was pondering this and it posed a huge con now that i am trying to decide if i should have a beach wedding. My concern is for the elders attending the wedding as walking on sand is difficult for some.

My cousin had a beach wedding. My issue - it works best to wear a dress to a beach wedding (to me anyway), but I personally need to wear nylons under a dress (I know I'm in the minority). I got sand in my nylons and it bothered me all through the reception.

I have to tell you that for me embarrassment is the bigger factor. I have really large feet. They are not what you would call pretty. There are no heels, sandals or open foot wear of any type in my closet. I would go to great lengths to avoid being bare foot outside my house.

I've been to several beach weddings. I normally just take off my shoes and walk down barefoot.

One of my brides had a basket of flip flops AND a bunch of big paintbrushes to get rid of the sand! I thought it was adorable!

If at all possible, have a couple of chairs available so people can sit down to take off and put back on their shoes.

Nikki, can you move the ceremony closer for the elderly guests? I recommend my couples have their ceremonies closer to the dunes than the water (a lot of our beaches are quite wide).
