How soon after your engagement did you start planning your wedding?

Maya, on July 22, 2017 at 12:57 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 112

My family is feeling like we are moving too fast in touring and finding vendors for our wedding though is 13 months away. We got engaged this week July 17th. Is it too soon to plan? Should I set the date further?

Personally I think 13 months is pretty long I got engaged in February of this year and we are getting married this September.

I don't think it is. It should be on you and your FH's own timeline. I waited two months to set a date and start planning.

I don't think it's too soon to plan. It's a good idea to start shopping around for your vendors, especially to see which ones connect best with you guys. We were engaged on 6/2/17 and are getting married on 6/9/18. So far we have our venue and photographer booked, and are looking into a DJ, videographer, and caterer....Congrats on your engagement! That's a good amount of time for planning. I always assumed a year or so out was normal. We got engaged at the beginning of Nov last year and I couldn't imagine planning everything in less than a year. The time is flying by.

Nope. You don't have a date until you have a venue. Some places book a year out, so I'd get cracking.

I got engaged Christmas Eve last year and we're getting married December 23 this year so nearly a year long engagement. I began planning the very next day because I was certain of the date I wanted and knew I had to find the venue first before anything else. The year has gone by so fast so 13 months will too. I recommend you begin looking for your venue now since that will dictate the rest of your planning.

We had our venue (and therefore our date) within a month of being engaged. All other major vendors (minus florist) were booked within 3 months. We had a 18 month engagement due to my venues availability. We wanted a very short engagement and therefore started planning early but the second thing we learned about wedding planning was you don't have a date till you have a venue. Our venue was booked for 18 months ahead and we got the first date they had available. The first lesson we learned was how expensive weddings were so having to wait 18 months worked in our favor.

Honestly, you're fine. Most venues can be booked about 2 years out. My venue had my original date booked 2 years out.

I started looking at venues almost immediately, though we didn't book one til about 6 months into our engagement (at that time 9 months from our wedding date).

I also did preliminary vendor research early, so when we booked our date, I had a shortlist of vendors ready.

Some venues and vendors are booked up to a year in advance, so nothing wrong with planning early.

By the time that our big day rolls around our engagement will have been 13 months. We jumped on looking and booking immediately because of the area that we are in. We found that our choice of dates and vendors was limited and dwindling fast, even with more than a year to plan.

I didn't want to jump into the planning so soon (engaged 6/4) thinking we would get married 2019, was surprised that FH wants to make it happen summer 2018. So yeah... freaking out a little as we don't have a venue yet and they are booking up quickly. Def enjoy your engagement but get on the venue booking mission ASAP and then relax a little before planning all the details :-)

I started researching venues the day after we got engaged, which was this past November. I also started looking at dresses right away. I'm so happy I looked into everything right away because it gave me time to consider all my options without feeling rushed or worrying that I wouldn't get a vendor I liked. Now I'm still eight months away but have almost everything set. All of my big vendors are booked, I ordered my dress, and now I'm starting to look into the smaller fun things, like decor. I feel so prepared and relaxed.

You may think thirteen months is a long ways away, but, trust me, it goes by quickly.

If anything, I'd at least start looking into what you want and getting ideas. By doing this early, it'll be easier for you pick things and vendors once you're ready to put down deposits.

I also agree with PPs that are saying to look into venues quick and book something, because your venue is what secures your date. You really can't make many plans without having your venue and date secured. I talked to several vendors who wouldn't consider working with us until we had a date and venue secured. You may think thirteen months is plenty of time, but many venues book anywhere from 1-2 years out. I originally wanted to get married this December, then changed it to February to accommodate more guests, and then was forced to change it to March because that was the first available Saturday my venue had in 2018. For reference, I booked my venue this past January, so fourteen months out.

I got engaged in September 2016 and I'm not getting married until February 2018. So we're having a 17 month engagement. I wanted to finish school before I got married. It's up to you guys. I booked my venue and then just recently started planning again. You can do little things here and there. It's been nice having time to planSmiley smile

We were engaged in April and are getting married after you. We've booked the ceremony and reception venue, photographer, and wedding coordinator. We've booked early enough that we didn't have to worry that others had already booked.
