How much to give for wedding gift?

Rachel, on April 1, 2016 at 9:40 AM

I know this question is hard.. For me it depends on relationship to that person.. but just an average.. Does where the couple is holding play into it? Does anyone hold on to their check , and write it in after they see the food they are serving? Thanks ! ----------------------- *UPDATED BY WW IN...

Typically, I give $100-150 if just I attend, and I give $200-$250 with a guest.

It may vary slightly depending on the circumstances, but I wouldn't feel comfortable showing up with less than $100, even for a casual wedding.

It depends. The last several weddings were friends, and I'd pick a few things off their registry that totaled around $50-$75, and I might have done more if exorbitant amounts of travel weren't involved.

My brother and his wife straight up asked for cash for their wedding so they could re-do their kitchen. I wrote them a check for $200...he's my brother and kitchens aren't cheap.

I usually give $300-$400 depending on relationship to bride and groom. I do not base in on the location of the wedding or cost per plate. That just doesn't make sense to me.

I'm in the Midwest. Depends on our relationship but usually 50 for the shower and 100 for the wedding. I'm just now starting to go to weddings as a working adult and that seems like the normal around here!

We're going to a wedding at the end of this month. The groom is FH's coworker, but they also socialize outside of work, so they are good friends, so we will be gifting them with a $300 cheque. Typically, we gift $200-$400, depending on our relationship with the bride or groom.

Okay, thanks for all the answers. I have read online you shouldn't even think of giving less than 300 per couple.. That it should always try and cover the cost of your plate, and leave them some extra..so I have always given 400. Looking over these answers I think I am over giving!

At least $200 as a cash gift, we've given up to $400 though

@Rachel I live in a high COL area and have a relatively affluent social circle, and I think $300 is very generous. I will say, though, that it's also dependent on the gift giver's age/financial standing...my parents are in their 60s and have given over $500 for their nieces/nephews/children of very very dear friends. FI and I probably wouldn't give that much even if we could afford it, because I'd be concerned about them thinking that gift needed to be reciprocated in some way.

I haven't been to many weddings but the past two I went to (friend from high school and fiancé's boss) we gave $100 each and I did go to my friends bridal shower and spent about $50.

Edit: There is actually a website where you fill out a couple questions and it gives you an amount. I think it basically asks about how much you make and how well you know the bride and groom.

$300 for me and my FH. If it's a close friend or relative prob more in the envelope. Kind of depends.

Someone on this site once used the phrase "give as you are moved and are able" and I think that sums it up perfectly. When all my friends were getting married and we were all in our 20s, back in the 90s, we gave $100 gifts to close friends, $50 to not-so-close-friends. Much more recently, I went to my younger brothers' weddings-- I gave them several hundred dollars worth, each, but I also had to travel from the West Coast Back East.

We are not quite established yet. But if we are close I have no issue with purchasing a great gift as well as giving cash. We do only give what we can comfortably afford however.

I don't believe in tit for tat giving however I will adjust the amount I give for some upcoming weddings we are attending. We put a fairly expensive (to us) knife set on our registry so we can get the discount after the wedding. A couple that we are friendly with, but not necessarily close to, bought it for us. We will definitely give more generously than usual for them.

I agree it depends on my relationship with the person. I am typically generous with the shower gift for my good friends, spending around $50-$75. We give $100 (as a couple) for good friends as a wedding gift. That's what we can afford. I would never give less than $50 as a wedding gift- that's what you get if we're not close with you. I have never factored in my meal when thinking about a gift! Its always been what was in MY budget.

For our own wedding, most people gave us $100. We had one couple give us $50 (a couple with a new baby) and one give us $75, and a few give us more than $100, and then some family members were very generous, but I would say $100 was definitely the average.

@Jacqui722 I don't think its weird to think about who bought/gave you what in the past and I think lots of people do it! We are certainly re-thinking our gift for our friend's wedding that's coming up who didn't give us anything at ours.

    @Jacqui722 was spot on.

And the "covering your plate" rule.....there never was one. Just a silly phrase overused over time. And unless you were handed a receipt at the door, there would be no way in knowing.

I usually give around $100. Most of my guests gifted something from my registry. Aside from one very generous second cousin, I didn't receive any big checks.

Ah but you get a good read on that .. it is easy to pick out (at least for me), who has spent serious money on food , and who has not.

It really depends on the couple. and where the wedding is. I might love you, but if I spent $900 on plane tickets and $125/night on a room-----I may not get you the $250 wine glasses you wanted. I have to be realistic.

I give what I can afford to or buy something I can afford from their registry. Where they have their wedding or what they serve has no bearing on what I give. I agree with Jacqui722. The gift should come from the heart.

Depending on how well we know/like the person, it's $50-150 check. It's not a lot comparatively but it's what we can afford to give.

I give $50 if I can't attend the wedding or if the person really isn't that close. We gave $50 for a wedding that we did attend (not at all close) and the thank you card was a little snarky. I will now just give gifts off the registry for people we don't know well or we just won't attend. Lesson learned.

For close friends, we never give cash. Usually it's an experience or sentimental gift worth $200 or so.
