How Long Is Your Engagement?

Lisa, on December 15, 2022 at 11:25 AM

How long will it be from the day you got engaged until the day you get married? My husband and I originally planned for a one year engagement, but thanks to COVID, it turned into a three year engagement!

Oh wow, a long engagement for sure! Did you already have your wedding date picked out when you got engaged? Valentine's Day is such a romantic day for an engagement!

That seems like a wonderful length for an engagement! Enough time to comfortably plan everything, but soon enough to where you don't have to wait too long.

Good to hear that you've got the biggest pieces done, and that everything is going well! I feel like booking vendors was the most overwhelming part for me, since we booked them all within a month or two of each other. Once that was done, it was a sigh of relief lol. What's next on your wedding planning to-do list?

Sorry to hear that you had to move your date due to COVID! We also had to postpone ours from 2020 to 2022 for the same reason, but it honestly worked out for the best. Your wedding will be totally worth the extra wait! Best wishes to you!

Thanks! ♥ I think one of the biggest things I wish I knew from the beginning is don't stress about the small things. Anticipate that it will be a good day, and acknowledge that there will be minor things that go wrong, but anything that goes "wrong" can be laughed about later (for example, our ring bearer refused to walk down the aisle, I forgot to wear my veil for the first look, and we accidentally left out parts of our centerpieces and part of our cake topper). A day of coordinator is also a really helpful vendor to have and totally worth the cost, in my opinion! Don't be afraid to do things differently if it suits you better than something traditional. Otherwise, just enjoy the day and focus on your new spouse and those who are there with you!

For preserving my dresses (I had 2), I dropped them off at a local shop that specializes in cleaning and preserving wedding gowns. They cleaned and preserved mine, I think it took like 2 months? They're currently stored in a box in my closet, though I'm trying to think of other ideas to where I can display them or even opportunities to wear them again.

I also had my bouquet preserved! There is a local company near me that puts together beautiful arrangements. It took her around a month and a half to complete it. She has multiple different frame styles, but my husband liked the circle frame best, so we went with that. My bouquet filled two frames. Here is how they turned out (along with a photo of what the bouquet looked like on my wedding day):How Long Is Your Engagement? 1
How Long Is Your Engagement? 2
How Long Is Your Engagement? 3

Are you planning to preserve your bouquet and dress? If so, what preservation styles are you considering for your bouquet?

We are going to be just shy of 6 years! We got engaged in July 2017, and then I encountered some health issues. We finally started talking dates in February 2020, with the idea of a fall 2020 wedding, and well 2 weeks later we stopped talking dates. We considered doing a courthouse wedding during Covid but our bare minimum family only guest list was 25 people, once you add the officiant, we couldn’t have a gathering that size. We finally got back to discussing dates last summer, and we’re getting married July 2023. Our Save the Date postcards literally say “We’re finally tying the knot?!” 🤣 But at least we’ve got a good long track record to know this is it for us.

I had a one year engagement, and it felt very long. Due to the need to plan, definitely needed the entire year but I would not have wanted to draw it out any longer due to the family coming in and inserting more and more ideas leading up to the day. It wound up beautiful, including added suggestions. But I was so happy the process had a clear end date! Emotionally, if I could have accomplished it in 8 months I would have.

We are working on the "Day Of" timeline now. And once our engagement photos come we plan on sending out invitations by Feb since we aren't doing Save the Dates. I feel like there is so much to do still!!

Oh wow, that's a long engagement! I agree with you though, the extra time can be super helpful. My engagement ended up being 3 years (instead of the 1 year we planned for initially), and I was so glad to have the extra time.
