How Long Is Your Engagement?

Lisa, on December 15, 2022 at 11:25 AM

How long will it be from the day you got engaged until the day you get married? My husband and I originally planned for a one year engagement, but thanks to COVID, it turned into a three year engagement!

It was plenty of time - but it was prepandemic, so vendors weren't such an issue as they are now lol.

We had originally planned to have a ~21 month engagement since we were finishing grad school, had licensing exams, and wanted to save up a bit. Then COVID hit and we tacked on another 12 months. If we had gotten married 3 weeks earlier than when we did it would have been exactly 1,000 days of being engaged lol.

The 2-year timeline when we got engaged in 2021 has changed several times. My dad passed away, my sister married the day before his passing. I couldn't even consider a wedding with the loss. So we are now in our six-year of courtship with a plan to get married in the fall or spring. It hasn't been easy finding the right venue in a small town. Our officiant and our maid of honor both live out of state. They work for school districts and have limited days they can take off. We finally narrowed it down to a local venue and then it happened. I saw the magic of a snowy romantic barn. A horse-drawn carriage has been my fiancé's dream. So a winter wedding is our new plan. So to make it a Winter wedding we have to wait until 2024 and make sure we miss all the relatives' birthdays and major holidays. hoping to have our wedding date set, once we can get the 2024 school schedules settled. So not officially married yet. I am encouraged that delays are just part of the process. Thank you ladies for sharing.

We got engaged 10/5/22 and our wedding is going to be 3/28/23 so just shy of 5 months. Originally we planned to elope but my parents were really set on a wedding. We’re keeping it extremely small. A ceremony and reception at an air b&b we’ve rented and less than 20 guests. Even with that small of an event, planning has been a whirlwind! I wouldn’t change anything about it though because we’re so excited I’m not sure either one of us would want to wait a day longer haha

Awesome that the timing seemed perfect for you! I think no matter how much time anyone has to plan, the last couple months are so stressful, since there are so many things that can't really be done too far in advance. I hope you can find time to relax during these last few weeks of your engagement, time definitely goes quick!

Very cool!! Three big life events for him all at once: retirement, moving a long distance away, and a marriage! Are you doing a destination elopement? Or eloping in your town?

I had also found my vendors pre-pandemic, I couldn't imagine trying to book vendors at this current time! Glad to hear that the planning went well for you!

21 months is a good amount of time to plan everything, without being too long! Bummer that COVID forced you to postpone, but the bright side is that you had an extra year to save up. Having exactly a 1,000-day engagement would have been fun, lol! Congratulations to you both on finishing grad school!

I'm so sorry for your loss of your dad. Totally understandable why you decided to change your timeline. Delays can sometimes work out in your favor! My husband and I were supposed to be married July 2020, but thanks to COVID, we postponed to July 2022. And honestly, I truly think it turned out for the absolute best. We had more time to save, adjusted our plans to be a little more of what we wanted and less of what other people expected us to do, and less stress with COVID. A snowy winter wedding sounds so magical!! The horse drawn carriage is a beautiful idea, and I hope you share pictures of how it turns out!

That seems like a good amount of time! Enough time to plan and book vendors to where you're not rushed and availability is good, but close enough to where you aren't waiting too long. Time will fly by, and your wedding will be here before you know it!

We just got engaged! We are planning for September 2024 but that might have to be September 2025 now due to some personal reasons... But I feel like both are sooo far away!

I want a Disney World wedding sooo bad! I was planning for one before we even got engaged but I was way too stressed out about it.. So, I picked a barn wedding. Total opposite of what I wanted originally! Haha

We planned for a 2 year engagement. If covid is going to stop us from being able to travel we are still going to get married...our wedding date is set no matter what
